Bitcoin Climbs 4.16% as Crypto Decouples From Falling Stocks — CLARITY Act, BitMEX's Exit and $26M in Bridge Hacks Defined the Week
Bitcoin gained 4.16% as crypto outperformed stocks amid CLARITY Act developments, BitMEX's shutdown announcement, major bridge exploits, and continued institutional investment, highlighting regulatory progress and evolving market infrastructure.

Crypto pulled away from equities this week. Total market capitalization climbed 2.30% to $2.22 trillion, with Bitcoin gaining 4.16% and Ether 2.98%, according to CoinMarketCap's weekly recap — while the S&P 500 lost 0.53% and the Nasdaq Composite barely moved. Altcoins posted selective gains alongside them.

The market's internals suggested a measured advance rather than a leveraged one. Liquidations stayed contained, with shorts closing earlier in the week and longs later, while funding rates held near neutral — indicating leverage never reached the levels seen during sharper swings. CoinMarketCap summed the week up in a phrase: the crypto market seeks clarity.

Washington Returns to Center Stage

The policy catalyst was legislative. Senator Cynthia Lummis released updated CLARITY Act text on July 22 after the Senate Banking and Agriculture committees merged their respective work, producing a draft covering regulator responsibilities, developer protections, stablecoin rules, ethics, anti-money-laundering controls and law enforcement provisions.

Lummis framed the coming weeks as the last real chance to pass the legislation for years. Senator Elizabeth Warren and other Democrats pushed back on the ethics language and enforcement structure, continuing a pattern in which disputes over political conflicts, DeFi protections and crime investigations have repeatedly stalled the bill — even as prediction-market odds for passage improved.

Corporate treasury activity offered a parallel signal. Strategy raised its US dollar reserve by $225 million to roughly $3.2 billion by selling common shares, while keeping its Bitcoin holdings unchanged at 843,775 BTC. The cash supports preferred-stock dividends and debt interest rather than funding new purchases.

BitMEX Sets Its Own Ending

The week's biggest structural news came from a veteran exchange. BitMEX announced it will close on September 23 at 04:00 UTC following a review of its business and the broader market. New registrations have already stopped, new positions will be blocked from August 26, and users can reduce positions and withdraw assets before the final shutdown.

The closure ends an 11-year run for the platform that popularized perpetual swaps and high-leverage crypto derivatives. BitMEX replaced senior executives in June amid reports of a possible sale, and its exit adds pressure to smaller centralized venues competing for liquidity while absorbing rising compliance costs.

Elsewhere, projects shifted direction: Hyperliquid outlined permissionless HIP-4 outcome markets requiring 500,000 HYPE in staking support, Pump.fun introduced BOOST Mode for new launches, and ENS DAO activated a two-year security council empowered to halt transactions deemed malicious.

Bridges Break Again

Security failures returned to the foreground, and cross-chain infrastructure was the common thread. AFX Trade lost roughly $24.15 million in USDC after attackers obtained enough validator signatures to approve a bridge withdrawal; Arbitrum confirmed its native bridge was unaffected, and AFX paused operations while investigators examined the compromised signing setup.

Allbridge halted its core bridge after a $1.65 million flash-loan attack on Solana liquidity pools, in which the attacker manipulated pool balances, withdrew assets at favorable rates and routed proceeds toward Ethereum. Across Protocol reported a separate Solana incident, though it said the loss hit a Risk Labs-operated relayer rather than customer funds, and later restored Solana deposits.

Together the incidents put bridge design and key management back at the center of DeFi security discussions — continuing a run of 2026 attacks that has included losses involving Kelp DAO and Axelar routes connected to Secret Network.

Institutional Money Keeps Building

Against the security headlines, capital kept arriving. Crypto.com announced a $400 million strategic investment from Citadel Securities at a $20 billion valuation, earmarked for expanding tokenized securities, derivatives and other asset classes across a planned around-the-clock financial platform.

S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital launched the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index, built on a rules-based method favoring productive blockchain assets and companies with measurable usage or revenue rather than token popularity or price momentum. And xStocks moved beyond US shares, adding tokenized exposure to Hong Kong-listed equities through Payward and GTN, with UK, European and South Korean securities under consideration pending approvals.

What Comes Next

The week combined a genuine market rebound with unresolved policy, visible security failures and continued infrastructure investment — a mix that leaves the direction open. Higher prices did nothing to remove the operational risks underneath them.

Three things will decide the next stretch: the CLARITY Act's path through the Senate, how the industry responds to the bridge attacks, and whether institutional funding converts into sustained trading and settlement activity rather than announcements. Traders will be watching funding rates and liquidation pressure for early signals.
