Uber Tests Weekend Treasury Access With HSBC on Canton

Uber completed a treasury pilot using HSBC tokenized deposits to invest in Franklin Templeton money market funds on Canton. The test included weekend access to invested cash, demonstrating a potential way for companies to keep money earning returns closer to when payments are due.

Uber Tokenized Treasury Pilot Tests Weekend Liquidity

Key Takeaways

  • The pilot connected bank deposits, tokenized fund shares and institutional trading infrastructure.
  • Weekend liquidity was demonstrated, but unrestricted commercial availability was not announced.
  • The potential benefit is more time invested—not a guaranteed higher interest rate.

Uber Tokenized Treasury Pilot Connects Investments and Payments

The Uber tokenized treasury pilot tested a practical corporate finance problem: how to earn returns on available cash while retaining access when payment obligations fall outside conventional market hours.

An October 30 announcement confirmed participation by HSBC, Franklin Templeton, Tradeweb and Fireblocks, with settlement on Canton. Uber purchased tokenized money market fund shares using HSBC tokenized deposits and subsequently liquidated part of its holdings, including over a weekend.

The official pilot announcement identifies the following roles:

Participant

Role in the pilot

Uber

Corporate treasury client

HSBC

Tokenized bank deposits

Franklin Templeton

Tokenized money market fund

Tradeweb

Trading workflow

Fireblocks

Wallet technology and controls

Canton

Network supporting synchronized settlement

The transaction used delivery-versus-payment: the investment and payment sides settled together. The announcement also specifies that fiat redemption proceeds can settle only to verified corporate bank accounts.

Why Weekend Access Matters

A corporate treasury team has competing responsibilities. It needs cash available for payments, but leaving more money idle than necessary can mean foregoing investment income.

Consider a simplified example: a company expects a payment obligation on Sunday. If its investment arrangements require it to prepare cash before Friday’s cutoff, it may exit an investment earlier than the payment itself requires.

More flexible settlement could shorten that gap. The economic benefit would depend on the amount invested, the additional time earning income, transaction costs and the terms under which liquidity is available.

Bitnxt’s guide to where investment yield comes from provides useful background: technology can change access and execution, but a return still needs an underlying economic source.

In this case, the investment is the money market fund. The blockchain coordinates the movement of assets and money.

Tokenized Deposits Remain Bank Money

HSBC explains that tokenized deposits represent conventional bank deposits in digital form, corresponding one-for-one with money held at the bank. Tokenization changes the infrastructure through which that money moves; it does not eliminate the underlying bank credit or currency risks.

The bank’s U.S. Tokenized Deposit Service page describes an onboarded corporate service operating on HSBC’s private blockchain. That existing offering should be distinguished from the Canton pilot involving several institutions. Availability of one does not establish general availability of the other.

For potential corporate users, the important questions include eligibility, supported investments, fees, redemption arrangements and the reliability of access during stressed markets.

From an Earlier Simulation to a Corporate Use Case

This work builds on an earlier technical exercise.

On April 13, Canton announced that HSBC had completed a pilot simulating the issuance, transfer and atomic settlement of tokenized deposits on its network. The October announcement adds a named corporate client and a treasury investment workflow to that earlier interoperability work.

A related development appeared in Bitnxt’s reporting on DTCC’s tokenization service launch. That service connects securities infrastructure with blockchain wallets, illustrating the broader effort to make traditional financial assets usable across new settlement systems.

Bitnxt’s Take: Measure the Cash Benefit

Our assessment is that this pilot’s strongest feature is its clearly defined business purpose. Keeping cash invested closer to a payment deadline could improve treasury efficiency without asking companies to change why they hold that cash.

However, the next test is economic rather than promotional. Corporate users need evidence of net savings after fees, dependable liquidity and repeatable execution.

The official announcement does not quantify Uber’s investment size or net financial benefit. A successful pilot establishes that the workflow was demonstrated; broader adoption will depend on whether it remains useful and reliable at scale.
