Bitget, Reality and Keyring Explore Equity Basis Trading With rTokens

Bitget, Reality and Keyring have published research on combining tokenized equities, perpetual contracts and decentralized lending. Historical simulations suggest potential returns, but the study also exposes financing and execution challenges. Related Bitget Earn products remain planned, subject to review, regulatory requirements and eligibility.

Onchain Equity Basis Trade: Bitget Shares rToken Research

Key Takeaways

  • The proposed strategy pairs tokenized equity holdings with offsetting short perpetual positions.
  • Historical simulations produced approximately 7% annualized net returns in-sample and 4% out-of-sample.
  • These figures are modeled results, not realized investor returns or promised yields.
  • Reducing stock-price exposure does not eliminate funding, collateral, liquidity or liquidation risks.

An onchain equity basis trade is the focus of new research published by Bitget, Reality and Keyring on October 28. The initiative examines whether tokenized stocks can support investment strategies beyond simply buying exposure to a company’s share price.

The proposed approach combines Reality’s rTokens with short positions in corresponding equity perpetual contracts. Keyring structures associated lending markets, while IPOR Fusion provides vault infrastructure and 1Token supports portfolio monitoring.

Selected products are planned for Bitget Earn. The announcement describes research and potential distribution, rather than an established record of customer returns.

How an Onchain Equity Basis Trade Works

The strategy aims to collect funding payments when perpetual-contract funding is positive, while using opposing positions to reduce sensitivity to stock-price movements.

Consider a simplified hypothetical example. An investor holds $10,000 of tokenized stock exposure and shorts an equivalent amount through a perpetual contract.

If both instruments track the same price movement closely, a gain on one side should broadly offset a loss on the other. Funding payments may then contribute income. Financing charges, trading costs and differences between the instruments affect the final result.

The hedge is therefore only part of the calculation. Its effectiveness depends on whether both positions remain appropriately sized and can be maintained through changing market conditions.

What the Research Results Actually Show

The study covers December 15, 2025, through October 19, 2026.

Measure

Reported result

Meaning

In-sample annualized net return

Approximately 7%

Simulated performance during the period used to establish parameters

Out-of-sample annualized net return

Approximately 4%

Simulated performance beyond the initial calibration period

Gross funding premium

Approximately 11%–14%

Funding opportunity before relevant strategy costs

Annualization expresses a result on a yearly basis; it does not mean investors earned that return over a full year.

The lower out-of-sample result deserves attention. Testing beyond the calibration period is useful, but it remains a historical simulation. Actual order fills, available liquidity and operational interruptions can differ from assumptions.

Neither net-return figure should be presented as a stablecoin lending rate. The research distinguishes lending income from the performance of the combined equity-and-perpetual strategy.

What Investors Hold Through rTokens

Bitget’s official rToken FAQ describes rTokens as instruments issued by Reality to provide economic exposure to U.S. stocks and ETFs.

It also states that holders do not receive direct registered ownership or shareholder voting rights. Those distinctions matter when comparing tokenized exposure with conventional brokerage shares.

A familiar ticker does not answer every question about an instrument. Investors still need to understand the applicable contractual rights, redemption arrangements and treatment of corporate actions.

Bitnxt’s analysis of blockchain transfer agents and tokenized securities examines this broader issue: the technology recording an asset and the rights attached to it require separate assessment.

Why a Hedged Position Can Still Face Liquidation

A portfolio can look balanced overall while one component runs short of collateral.

For example, suppose a tokenized equity position falls in value while its matching short position gains. The combined economic exposure may remain broadly hedged. But if the lending platform cannot immediately use the gain held elsewhere, it may still demand additional collateral or liquidate the loan.

That is an operational problem as much as a forecasting problem.

Keyring’s liquidation documentation distinguishes between active leveraged positions and positions already moving through a redemption process. It describes separate mechanisms for handling those situations, including an auction process where settlement is still pending.

The implication is important: recording positions onchain does not guarantee an immediate exit from every underlying asset.

Funding can also change direction. A strategy built around receiving payments must account for periods when maintaining the short position instead creates a cost.

Bitnxt’s Take: The Real Test Is What Remains After Costs

At Bitnxt, we see the research as a useful examination of how tokenized assets might become inputs for lending and portfolio management. Its value lies in testing the economics and operational demands of that combination.

Our earlier coverage of SEI access and Dinari’s tokenized-stock plans separated asset availability from demonstrated usage. This research adds another stage: whether available instruments can support a repeatable investment process.

We would judge a future product by realized performance after all fees, the quality of its collateral management and how clearly investors can understand an exit under stress.

The ability to combine financial components is promising. Each additional component also introduces dependencies that must work together when markets become difficult.

What Comes Next?

The next meaningful evidence would be final product terms, confirmed availability and transparent reporting of live results.

That reporting should distinguish the returns earned by stablecoin lenders from those earned by investors in the basis strategy. It should also show how performance changes when funding weakens, borrowing becomes more expensive or liquidity declines.

Bitnxt’s coverage of BlackRock, SBI and Startale’s tokenized-fund initiative highlights a related development: institutions are exploring connections between investments and payment infrastructure. Turning those connections into reliable services remains the practical test.

For Bitget, Reality and Keyring, the research establishes a framework to examine. Live implementation will determine how closely its results can be reproduced.
