BlackRock, SBI and Startale Explore a Yen Stablecoin Link for Tokenized Funds

BlackRock, SBI Holdings and Startale have agreed to explore connecting tokenized money market funds with Japan’s JPYSC stablecoin. The agreement covers infrastructure, distribution and regulation, but does not announce a live integration or a launch date.

JPYSC Stablecoin: BlackRock, SBI Explore Fund Link

Key Takeaways

  • The October 27 announcement involves SBI Holdings, Startale and two BlackRock entities.
  • The companies will study a connection between tokenized money market funds and JPYSC.
  • RWA.xyz showed approximately $2.17 billion in BUIDL assets on October 27; that is existing fund value, not money committed to this partnership.
  • JPYSC began its initial rollout in June, restricted at launch to SBI VC Trade accounts.
  • The next test is a usable settlement process with clear investor access, conversion terms and redemption arrangements.

The JPYSC stablecoin could become a link between yen-denominated digital payments and tokenized investment funds under a new agreement involving BlackRock, SBI Holdings and Startale Group.

Announced on October 27, 2026, the memorandum of understanding brings together SBI Holdings and Startale with BlackRock Financial Management and BlackRock Japan.

The companies will examine technical infrastructure, business and distribution opportunities, and regulatory and market requirements. The collaboration is intended to accommodate other financial institutions and businesses in Japan and overseas.

The important qualification is its stage of development. The announcement establishes an exploration framework; it does not confirm an operational connection between a BlackRock fund and JPYSC.

What the JPYSC Stablecoin Agreement Covers

SBI’s official announcement describes a combination of BlackRock’s tokenized-fund expertise, SBI’s financial services network and regulatory experience, and Startale’s blockchain infrastructure.

The proposed connection addresses a practical issue. Putting fund ownership on a blockchain does not, by itself, explain how an investor pays for those shares or receives money when exiting.

A compatible settlement asset could help connect those steps.

The final row matters. The official release refers to tokenized money market funds broadly. It does not identify BUIDL as a confirmed production integration.

Why Connect a Fund With a Stablecoin?

A tokenized fund and a stablecoin serve different purposes.

The fund represents an investment. A yen stablecoin is designed to track the yen and can potentially provide the payment side of a transaction.

For example, an eligible investor might use digital yen to subscribe to a tokenized fund and later receive digital yen when redeeming. That is an illustration of the possible use case, not a workflow confirmed by this agreement.

The potential benefit is fewer disconnected steps between the investment and its payment. Whether that produces faster settlement or lower costs depends on the final design.

Bitnxt’s earlier coverage of Ondo’s DTCC connection and tokenized-fund distribution examines a related issue: creating an investment product and making it accessible through financial infrastructure are separate tasks.

BUIDL’s $2.17 Billion Provides Context, Not a Funding Commitment

BlackRock introduced the BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund, known as BUIDL, in March 2024.

Its original launch release described a portfolio invested in cash, U.S. Treasury bills and repurchase agreements. It also specified transfers between pre-approved investors, illustrating that blockchain-based ownership can still involve access restrictions.

RWA.xyz’s BUIDL dashboard showed approximately $2.168 billion in total asset value on October 27, 2026, supporting the rounded $2.17 billion figure circulating with this news.

That number measures an existing fund. It is not a disclosed investment in the SBI–Startale collaboration, a JPYSC reserve figure or a forecast of future settlement activity.

There is also a currency question. BUIDL is a U.S. dollar product; JPYSC is yen-denominated. Any eventual connection involving those two assets would need to address currency conversion and who bears exchange-rate risk.

A yen payment option would not automatically make a dollar investment yen-hedged.

JPYSC’s June Launch Offers Useful Historical Context

SBI’s June 24 announcement confirmed the initial issuance and availability of JPYSC, with SBI Shinsei Trust Bank as issuer and SBI VC Trade handling distribution.

However, the launch had a specific boundary: initial access was limited to SBI VC Trade accounts. The release described a later transition to public-chain circulation once relevant legal and tax-practice issues were resolved.

That is a historical launch condition, not proof that the same restrictions remain unchanged today.

It nevertheless shows why a stablecoin launch and a fund integration should be treated as separate milestones. An issued token still needs suitable custody, access and settlement arrangements for each additional use case.

The latest MOU addresses the next layer of that work.

Bitnxt View: Watch the Settlement Process, Not Just the Names

Our view is that the strongest part of this announcement is the problem the companies want to solve.

Tokenized assets become more useful when investors can move between an investment and spendable money through a clear, dependable process.

The partnership brings relevant capabilities together. Its practical value will depend on details that the announcement leaves open: who can participate, which funds are supported, how conversions work and when redemptions complete.

Bitnxt’s broader coverage of tokenization, BlackRock and stablecoin regulation provides context for that relationship between products and the infrastructure around them.

We would look next for a named pilot or product, published access conditions and evidence of completed transactions. Those would give readers a firmer basis for judging progress than the size of an existing fund.

For now, this is a concrete agreement to investigate the connection. The commercial case will become clearer when the partners show how customers can actually use it.
