MicroBit Debuts Hong Kong's First Combined Bitcoin and Gold ETF on HKEX

MicroBit Debuts Hong Kong's First Combined Bitcoin and Gold ETF on HKEX
MicroBit Capital Management has launched Hong Kong's first ETF combining Bitcoin and gold in a single fund, listed on HKEX under dual HKD and USD counters, aiming to pair crypto's growth potential with gold's stability.

Hong Kong's exchange-traded fund market has a new entrant, and it's one that hasn't been tried in the city before: a single fund holding both Bitcoin and gold. MicroBit Capital Management Limited listed the MicroBit Bitcoin and Gold Value ETF on The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong on August 26, trading under two separate counters — 3002.HK for HKD-denominated shares and 9002.HK for USD-denominated shares.

The launch positions MicroBit as the first issuer in Hong Kong to combine Bitcoin exposure with gold in a single exchange-traded product, rather than offering the two asset classes through separate funds. It's a notable move in a market where institutional appetite for crypto-linked financial products has been steadily building, and where regulators have shown a comparatively open posture toward licensed digital-asset investment vehicles.

Pairing a Volatile Asset With a Traditional Safe Haven

The core idea behind the fund is straightforward: Bitcoin and gold serve very different roles in a portfolio, and MicroBit is betting that combining them into one product will appeal to investors who want exposure to both without managing two separate holdings.

Gold has functioned as a store of value for centuries, prized for its relative price stability during periods of economic stress. Bitcoin, by contrast, is a much newer asset class known for sharp price swings but also for outsized long-term growth potential since its creation. By blending the two, MicroBit is framing the fund as a way to soften some of Bitcoin's volatility with gold's steadier track record, while still giving investors direct participation in crypto market upside.

One structural detail sets this fund apart from many other crypto ETFs: it supports in-kind subscriptions and redemptions in Bitcoin itself. In practical terms, that means eligible market participants can exchange actual Bitcoin holdings for fund shares (or vice versa) rather than being required to transact purely in cash. This kind of arrangement is typically reserved for larger institutional players and authorized participants, and it can improve a fund's operational efficiency by reducing the need to constantly convert between crypto and fiat currency behind the scenes.

What MicroBit's Leadership Said

Wilson Fung, Chief Executive Officer of MicroBit Group, framed the listing as part of a broader effort to connect conventional finance with the Web3 space. He described the fund as a "forward-looking, diversified allocation tool" that brings together Bitcoin's long-term potential as a digital asset with gold's established role as a hedge against uncertainty. Fung characterized the launch as a milestone in MicroBit's stated mission of bridging traditional financial markets with decentralized and blockchain-based ecosystems.

The listing ceremony was marked by a traditional gong-striking at HKEX, with Fung joined by MicroBit's Chief Operating Officer, Henry Wang. The company said it intends to keep expanding its lineup of investment products aimed at giving investors more diversified ways to access digital and frontier-technology assets.

A Regulated Fund in a Tightly Licensed Jurisdiction

MicroBit operates under a Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong (SFC) license covering Type 1 (Dealing in Securities), Type 4 (Advising on Securities), and Type 9 (Asset Management) regulated activities. Because it manages virtual-asset-linked products, the firm is also subject to the SFC's additional terms and conditions specifically designed for Virtual Asset Fund Managers.

Hong Kong has positioned itself as one of the more structured regulatory environments in Asia for crypto-related financial products, requiring virtual-asset fund managers to meet a distinct compliance layer beyond standard securities licensing. That framework has allowed a small but growing number of Bitcoin and crypto-adjacent ETFs to list on HKEX in recent years, with MicroBit's fund now extending that lineup into a new combined-asset category.

The fund itself, officially named the MicroBit Bitcoin & Gold Value ETF, operates as a sub-fund under the broader MicroBit Funds Series (Hong Kong) ETF OFC structure. Its stated investment objective is long-term capital appreciation through diversified exposure to both digital and traditional store-of-value assets — Bitcoin and gold specifically. As with any actively pursued investment objective, there's no guarantee the fund will achieve that goal, and MicroBit has been explicit in its public disclosures that returns are not assured.

The Risk Profile Behind a Bitcoin-Linked Product

Along with the launch announcement, MicroBit published an extensive list of risk factors tied to the fund — a requirement common to regulated crypto investment products, and one that underscores how differently Bitcoin is still treated compared to more established asset classes in formal disclosure documents.

The disclosed risks span several categories. On the Bitcoin side, they include the asset's inherent volatility, the speculative nature of crypto markets broadly, concentration of ownership among a relatively small number of large holders, and the potential for fraud, market manipulation, or security failures across the broader Bitcoin ecosystem. The fund's documentation also flags cybersecurity risk, the possibility of network forks affecting Bitcoin's underlying protocol, risks tied to the platforms used for trading virtual assets, and the ongoing uncertainty around how regulators worldwide may treat Bitcoin going forward.

Gold carries its own market risk, as commodity prices can move independently of broader economic conditions. And because this is a new product combining two distinct asset classes for the first time in Hong Kong's market, MicroBit also disclosed a general "new product risk," acknowledging that funds without an established trading history carry additional uncertainty simply by virtue of being untested.

The fund's structure adds a few more layers of complexity worth noting for prospective investors: differences in dealing arrangements and cost mechanisms between listed and unlisted share classes, reliance on market makers to maintain liquidity, potential early termination risk if the fund doesn't attract sufficient interest, and the operational realities of trading hours differing between markets when the underlying assets (Bitcoin trades globally around the clock, while HKEX has fixed trading hours) don't align perfectly.

MicroBit has stated the fund has been authorized by the SFC, though it's careful to clarify that SFC authorization is not an endorsement or recommendation of the product — a standard but important distinction in how regulated Hong Kong investment products are marketed to the public.

Part of a Broader Institutional Trend

MicroBit's launch adds to a pattern that's become increasingly visible across global markets over the past few years: traditional financial institutions building regulated wrappers around Bitcoin exposure, rather than leaving crypto access solely to unregulated exchanges or direct wallet ownership. Combining Bitcoin with gold specifically reflects a growing narrative among asset managers that the two can complement each other in a diversified portfolio — gold as the established hedge, Bitcoin as the newer, higher-risk-higher-reward addition.

Whether that pairing resonates with Hong Kong investors will likely become clearer over the fund's first several months of trading, as volume and share price behavior offer an early signal of demand. For now, the listing gives Hong Kong-based and international investors trading through HKEX a new, single-ticket way to gain exposure to both assets without managing separate Bitcoin and gold holdings independently.

MicroBit has indicated this is not intended to be a one-off product. The firm said it plans to continue developing additional investment vehicles across virtual assets and other frontier technology categories, positioning itself as an ongoing player in Hong Kong's evolving digital-asset fund landscape.
