JPMorgan Projects 10% Annual Bitcoin Returns—But Keeps Its Portfolio Caution

J.P. Morgan Asset Management has introduced Bitcoin into its long-term return research, pairing an optimistic growth assumption with a much tougher assessment of its risks.

JPMorgan Bitcoin Forecast Targets 10% Annual Returns

Key Takeaways

  • The 2027 outlook assigns Bitcoin a 10% annual compound return assumption over a 10–15-year horizon.
  • Its 55% annualized volatility assumption signals substantially greater uncertainty than conventional assets.
  • Bitcoin appears in a separate illustrative comparison, outside the firm’s main covariance matrices.
  • The research supports long-term planning; it is not a prediction of next year’s Bitcoin performance.

JPMorgan Bitcoin Forecast Adds a New Dimension to Institutional Research

The JPMorgan Bitcoin forecast gives institutional investors a new reference point for assessing the cryptocurrency: a long-term return estimate alongside established asset classes, accompanied by explicit reservations about portfolio construction.

Released on October 19, the 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions is the asset manager’s 31st annual edition. Its research covers more than 200 assets and draws on over 90 investment professionals.

The inclusion is significant because return forecasts help investment committees compare opportunities under a common framework. But inclusion in research does not automatically translate into an allocation recommendation.

J.P. Morgan’s official materials make that distinction clear: Bitcoin’s changing relationships with other assets remain an obstacle to its wider use in strategic portfolios.

The Numbers Behind the Headline

The selected comparison places Bitcoin ahead of U.S. large-cap stocks and gold on expected compound returns. Its assumed volatility is also dramatically higher.

Forward-looking assumptions from the 2027 research; these are not realized returns or guaranteed outcomes. Bitcoin’s figures appear in a separate illustrative matrix.

The comparison should be read across both columns. A higher expected return does not establish that an asset is a better investment for every portfolio.

Nor does a volatility estimate describe the maximum possible loss. It measures the dispersion of returns; severe drawdowns can still occur.

Why the 20.9% Figure Means Something Different

The table circulating with the announcement also gives Bitcoin an arithmetic return assumption of 20.9%. That is a different measure from the compound figure leading the headlines.

The arithmetic average takes annual returns and averages them. Compounding follows what happens to the invested money through successive gains and losses.

Consider a simple example:

  • An investment rises from $100 to $150, gaining 50%.

  • It then falls 50%, leaving $75.

  • Its arithmetic average annual return is zero, yet the investor has lost 25%.

This mathematical example is unrelated to JPMorgan’s forecasting model, but it explains why volatile assets can have a large gap between the two measures. The figures cannot be used interchangeably.

Why Bitcoin Remains Outside the Main Portfolio Matrices

Forecasting an asset’s return is only one part of building a portfolio. Investors also need assumptions about how it behaves alongside everything else they own.

A covariance matrix helps model those relationships. If an asset’s correlations shift substantially, its diversification contribution becomes harder to rely on.

J.P. Morgan has therefore published a smaller, separate Bitcoin comparison rather than incorporating it fully into its main matrices. Its outlook also challenges the assumption that currency debasement would necessarily trigger a rush into crypto.

For investors, this raises a more useful question than whether Bitcoin “beats” stocks: What role would it play, and how much portfolio risk would that role introduce?

Bitnxt’s examination of Wall Street’s expanding crypto infrastructure explores another side of this institutional shift.

A Long-Term Framework, Not a Trading Signal

The “2027” label identifies the research edition. The assumptions address the next 10–15 years, rather than a one-year price target.

The official research states:

“The assumptions are not designed to inform short term tactical allocation decisions.”

Daily trading and ETF flows answer different questions. Bitnxt’s guide to interpreting Bitcoin ETF inflows looks at current demand, while a long-term capital market framework considers strategic expectations across market cycles.

The wider outlook projects a 7% annual return for a U.S. dollar-denominated 60/40 stock-bond portfolio. Its broader argument emphasizes diversification, productivity gains and higher bond yields, alongside persistent inflation uncertainty.

Bitnxt View: Recognition Comes With a Higher Standard of Scrutiny

Bitcoin’s appearance in this research is a meaningful step toward being evaluated through conventional investment tools.

That scrutiny cuts both ways. Investors gain a framework for comparing potential rewards, but they must also confront volatility, unstable correlations and the consequences of position sizing.

Our reading is that the research strengthens the case for taking Bitcoin seriously as an asset to analyze. It does not settle how much investors should own or whether it belongs in every portfolio.

Access, ownership and suitability remain separate decisions. Bitnxt’s explanation of how Bitcoin ownership works inside IBIT provides useful context for readers considering fund-based exposure.
