Harmony Will Sunset Its Layer 1 and Move ONE to Ethereum

Harmony sunsets its Layer 1 blockchain as ONE tokens transition to the Ethereum network.

Summary :

  • Harmony proposed shutting down its 7-year-old layer 1 entirely.

  • ONE becomes an ERC-20 on Ethereum after a final network snapshot.

  • Users must exit smart contracts before September 10.

  • Validators get a $1.372 million pool over four quarters.

  • The pivot target is an AI video "remix economy" subscription.

Harmony, the sharded layer 1 that launched in 2019 promising Ethereum scale with two-second finality, has proposed shutting itself down. The plan: users exit smart contracts before Sept. 10, validators begin winding down nodes the same day, a final snapshot records every balance, and ONE re-emerges on Ethereum as an ERC-20. Seven years of an independent chain, surrendered to the chain it was built to outrun.

The migration mechanics are as blunt as the decision. The snapshot covers wallet balances, delegations, rewards, smart contracts and exchange holdings, with ERC-20 ONE auto-distributed to identical addresses, supply and emission rates unchanged. The exceptions are fatal for anyone building on Harmony: multisig safes, liquidity pools and on-chain apps cannot migrate at all. Validators and delegators share a $1.372 million pool over four quarters, with Harmony covering emission reward differences up to the final block, whose date is unset. The proposal is explicitly non-binding, and governance rules require 51% stake participation with 66.7% approval, though Harmony has not confirmed a formal validator vote will even happen.

How Harmony got here: three catastrophic failures

The death spiral was not mysterious. In August 2026, a cross-shard receipt verification flaw let an attacker mint over 3 trillion ONE across six transactions, transferring 2.385 trillion across 477 transactions, forcing a planned rollback of 141,628 blocks and over 109,000 transactions. Before that came the roughly $100 million Horizon bridge hack in June 2022, and a December 2023 inflation bug that minted 146.28 million ONE across 74 addresses. Three monetary failures in four years, each a different component, is not bad luck. It is a protocol whose security model never matched its complexity, and the August rollback, overwriting 315 staking transactions along with everything else, told holders what their finality guarantee was actually worth. The industry's exploit tally keeps climbing, and Harmony's answer to being part of it is to stop being a chain.

The destination tells its own story. Ethereum is where distressed L1 assets go for custody of last resort: Vitalik's transaction redesign and EIP-8141's account-abstraction push are making the base layer cheaper to verify each cycle, absorbing exactly the workloads small chains cannot afford to secure. ONE holders get real security and real liquidity. What they lose is any pretense that the token's value proposition survived the transition; an ERC-20 with no app surface is a dead asset on life support.

The AI pivot deserves the side-eye it is getting

Then there is the business plan. Harmony intends to become an AI video "remix economy": creators publish prompts, AI agents generate clips, year-one GPU hardware is subsidized targeting up to $1 million in combined operator revenue, with a floated $10 monthly subscription and 30% referral commissions. Those are speculative targets for an unreleased product from a team whose last three engineering projects ended in emergency patches and a rollback. The pattern, distressed project pivots to the loudest narrative of the moment, from metaverse to AI, is one the market has seen many times, and it has never once ended with the pivot outperforming the original thesis. Pi Network shipping real infrastructure for its final upgrade is at least a chain doubling down on being a chain.

Watch the validator response through September 10. If the vote convenes and passes cleanly, ONE holders get an orderly exit to Ethereum and the industry gets a template for euthanizing a chain with some dignity. If governance skips the vote, a foundation that just rollbacked 109,000 transactions will have decided its network's death by announcement, and every remaining ONE holder will have learned the same lesson the hard way twice: the code was never the authority here.
