Grayscale Quietly Killed Three Altcoin ETFs Before Cardano Became Eligible

Grayscale Quietly Killed Three Altcoin ETFs Before Cardano Became Eligible
Grayscale withdrew Cardano, Polkadot, and Hedera ETF registrations in 190 seconds, two days before ADA cleared the SEC futures seasoning threshold.

Grayscale Investments withdrew its Cardano, Polkadot, and Hedera ETF registrations in under four minutes on August 7, pulling out of three altcoin exchange-traded fund products exactly two days before Cardano cleared the SEC futures seasoning threshold that would have opened the door for a spot ADA ETF listing.

The withdrawals, executed through three Form RW filings with the SEC at 4:33 p.m. Eastern on August 7, took just 190 seconds to complete. All three filings contained identical boilerplate language stating that the company no longer intended to proceed with the planned distributions. No shares had been issued, sold, or distributed under any of the three registrations.

The Timing That Raised Eyebrows

What made the withdrawal remarkable was not the speed but the date. Cardano's CME futures contract launched on February 9, 2026, and completed its six-month seasoning period on August 9 — two days after Grayscale walked away. Under the SEC's streamlined listing framework, approved in September 2025, a completed seasoning period allows eligible funds to list spot crypto ETFs without the full 19b-4 rule-change process that previously stretched approval timelines to 240 days or more.

Grayscale was the first major issuer to convert a crypto trust into an ETF with GBTC and ETHE, establishing the playbook that the entire industry followed. Walking away from the Cardano ETF on the finish line sent a signal that the economics of altcoin ETFs may not justify the regulatory and operational costs, even for the largest crypto asset manager in the world. For more on how ETF markets are evolving, see our coverage of tokenized equities growth.

Why Grayscale Pulled Out

The withdrawal appears driven by economics rather than regulatory concerns. Grayscale reported a 20% revenue decline in its IPO filing, with GBTC and ETHE generating 88% of the firm's approximately $318.7 million in nine-month revenue while bleeding a combined $30 billion in cumulative outflows since their ETF conversions. Adding three more low-demand altcoin ETFs to that portfolio would have increased costs without meaningfully boosting revenue.

The market data supports this assessment. ADA trades near $0.196 with a $6.55 billion market cap, DOT sits at $0.805, and HBAR has fallen to $0.068. All three are down more than 60% from their all-time highs and collectively represent a fraction of the institutional demand that drove Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF launches. The fee revenue from managing these products would likely have been minimal compared to the operational, legal, and compliance costs of maintaining them.

Other Issuers Still in the Race

Five other issuers still have active ADA ETF filings: Bitwise, Canary Capital, VanEck, and 21Shares among them. The earliest possible SEC decision window falls around October 23, 2026, meaning Cardano ETF approvals could still arrive before the end of the year, just without Grayscale's participation.

The remaining issuers may face different economic calculations than Grayscale. Smaller asset managers with lower overhead costs may find altcoin ETFs viable even at modest asset levels. Additionally, some issuers may view altcoin ETFs as strategic positioning for future market recovery rather than immediate revenue generators. For context on altcoin market dynamics, read our analysis of Cardano's roadmap.

What This Means for Altcoin ETFs

Grayscale's retreat highlights the fundamental challenge facing altcoin ETFs: institutional demand for anything beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum remains thin. The success of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs was built on massive institutional appetite, deep derivatives markets, and established custody infrastructure. Altcoins lack all three of these foundations, making it difficult for ETF issuers to generate sufficient fee revenue to justify the costs.

The withdrawal also raises questions about the broader altcoin ETF pipeline. If the largest crypto asset manager in the world cannot make the economics work for Cardano, Polkadot, and Hedera — three of the more established altcoins — then the prospects for smaller tokens are even more uncertain. The altcoin ETF market may need to wait for a broader crypto market recovery before it can sustain a meaningful number of products.

What Comes Next

Grayscale could refile at any time, as a voluntary withdrawal carries no stigma and no waiting period under SEC Rule 477. If market conditions improve and institutional demand for altcoin exposure increases, the company may return to the altcoin ETF space. For now, the withdrawal leaves the altcoin ETF market to smaller issuers willing to operate at lower margins.

The October 23 decision window for the remaining ADA ETF filings will be the next major milestone. If any issuer receives approval, it would mark the first spot altcoin ETF in the U.S. market and could reshape expectations for the entire altcoin ETF category.
