Nearly $1 Billion in Crypto Positions Liquidated as Inflation Jolts Bitcoin and Ether

Nearly $1 Billion in Crypto Positions Liquidated as Inflation Jolts Bitcoin and Ether — Market Analysis crypto news

Summary:

  • Reported crypto liquidations approached $1 billion over a rolling 24-hour period on October 15, with bullish positions bearing most of the damage.

  • September US inflation reached 3.7% year over year, exceeding the 3.6% consensus forecast.

  • Bitcoin slipped below $81,000 during Asian trading, while Ether recorded a steeper decline.

  • Higher inflation renewed concerns about further Federal Reserve tightening, adding pressure to an already unsettled market.

  • The liquidation total measures forcibly closed leveraged positions, rather than an equivalent loss in crypto market capitalization.

Crypto liquidations approached $1 billion on October 15 as hotter-than-expected US inflation unsettled traders and falling prices forced leveraged positions to close. Bitcoin slipped below $81,000 during Asian trading, while Ether fell more sharply as the sell-off spread across digital assets.

The pressure fell heavily on traders betting on a recovery. One reported 24-hour snapshot put liquidations at approximately $948 million, including $873 million in long positions. That would place bullish bets at roughly 92% of the total. A separate report recorded $957.77 million as the rolling window changed. These are different snapshots of the same developing episode and should not be added together.

The immediate catalyst came from Washington. September’s inflation release challenged hopes that price pressures were cooling, leaving traders to reassess how restrictive US monetary policy might become.

Crypto liquidations near $1 billion: what the figures reveal

The imbalance between long and short liquidations helps explain the speed of the decline.

A long position benefits when prices rise. When the market falls far enough, an exchange can close that position automatically because its remaining collateral no longer meets margin requirements. Those closures can intensify an existing sell-off, particularly when many traders hold similar positions.

Using the reported $948 million snapshot:

There is an important distinction behind the headline. Almost $1 billion in liquidations does not mean investors withdrew that amount from crypto funds, nor does it measure the market’s total decline in value. It represents the reported value of leveraged positions forcibly closed.

Bitnxt previously examined the relationship between derivatives positioning and spot demand in its coverage of Bitcoin’s $1.4 billion decline in futures open interest. That distinction matters again: a reduction in leverage can ease immediate pressure without proving that fresh buyers have returned.

The inflation surprise was in the annual reading

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics released September’s Consumer Price Index on October 14 at 8:30 a.m. ET, equivalent to 6 p.m. IST.

Its findings showed inflation accelerating across both the headline and core annual measures:

Inflation measure

3.7%

Core CPI, year over year

2.4%

2.6%

Headline CPI, month over month

0.6%

Core CPI, month over month

0.3%

Core CPI excludes food and energy. Monthly changes are seasonally adjusted; annual changes are unadjusted.

The detail is more revealing than the phrase “hot inflation” alone. Economists had expected the 0.6% monthly headline increase. The annual headline figure nevertheless exceeded the 3.6% forecast, while annual core inflation also came in above the anticipated 2.5%.

Energy played a substantial role. In its release, the BLS said:

“The index for gasoline rose 9.1 percent in September.”

Gasoline accounted for more than half of the monthly headline increase. The rise in annual core inflation also gave investors reason to look beyond fuel prices when assessing the outlook.

For the setup before the announcement, see Bitnxt’s report on Bitcoin and crypto markets ahead of the US inflation release.

Why Bitcoin and Ether felt the pressure

Higher inflation can hurt crypto through the interest-rate outlook.

If investors believe the Federal Reserve will keep borrowing costs elevated—or tighten policy further—the appeal of taking additional market risk can weaken. More expensive financing also puts pressure on leveraged strategies.

This time, the inflation release arrived during an existing period of concern about technology stocks and the financing demands of the AI industry. Reuters reported that the data intensified selling in major AI shares as investors reconsidered borrowing-cost exposure.

Crypto therefore faced two overlapping pressures: a less comfortable macroeconomic outlook and a market structure vulnerable to forced closures.

Bitcoin traded below $81,000 during the Asian session, while Ether lost more than 6% over the reported 24-hour period. Those figures describe the contemporaneous sell-off, rather than live prices at publication.

The cross-market backdrop follows Bitnxt’s earlier coverage of Bitcoin’s rebound as Korean chip stocks declined. A temporary divergence between Bitcoin and equities does not guarantee that crypto will remain insulated when broader financial conditions change.

What would make a recovery more convincing?

A sharp liquidation event can remove crowded positions. It cannot, by itself, establish a market bottom.

Three developments would offer a clearer picture:

  • Spot demand: Sustained buying would provide stronger evidence of support than a brief bounce driven by derivatives.

  • Leverage after the decline: Rapid rebuilding of bullish positions could leave the market exposed to another forced unwind.

  • Interest-rate expectations: Further changes in the policy outlook could continue to move both crypto and equities.

It would also be premature to conclude that higher inflation guarantees a rate increase. Expectations changed after the release, but subsequent reporting showed that cautious Federal Reserve commentary tempered some hike bets. Policy pricing remained fluid.

Bitnxt’s view: watch the buyers after the forced sellers

The most useful question now is who is willing to buy once liquidation-driven selling slows.

A rebound accompanied by healthier spot demand would carry a different message from one built on fresh leverage. Equally, another weak session would not automatically establish a long-term breakdown. The market still needs to show how it trades after the immediate inflation reaction passes.

This episode demonstrates how quickly a macroeconomic surprise can expose crowded positioning. Inflation changed the outlook; leverage amplified the adjustment.
