Hargreaves Lansdown Opens 9 Crypto ETNs to Investors

Hargreaves Lansdown opens access to nine crypto ETNs for investors.

Summary :

  • Hargreaves Lansdown opened nine Bitcoin and Ether ETNs to retail investors.

  • About two million clients can access the products after eligibility checks.

  • Investors must self-certify, pass an assessment and wait 24 hours.

  • Products come from BlackRock, WisdomTree, 21Shares, Invesco and others.

  • Annual product fees range from 0% to 0.35% across the lineup.

Crypto ETNs have arrived on Britain's biggest retail investment platform, as Hargreaves Lansdown opened nine Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded notes to its roughly two million customers — ending the holdout of the UK's most conservative major broker and giving regulated crypto exposure its widest British retail reach yet.

The launch, effective Sept. 3, offers ETNs issued by BlackRock's iShares, WisdomTree, 21Shares, Invesco, CoinShares and Bitwise, with annual product fees ranging from 0% to 0.35%, according to a Financial Times report. The instruments are available only through the platform's Advanced Investing service, and access carries deliberate friction: customers must self-certify as advanced investors, complete an online appropriateness assessment testing their understanding of the products and risks, and then wait out a 24-hour cooling-off period before viewing the available ETNs. A Fund and Share Account or a self-invested personal pension is required to buy, hold or sell.

From "not an asset class" to nine ETNs

The reversal is recent and revealing. In October 2025 — almost 11 months after the Financial Conduct Authority ended its four-year restriction on retail access to qualifying crypto ETNs — Hargreaves Lansdown told investors that "Bitcoin is not an asset class," while acknowledging that some customers might still want speculative exposure. Chief product officer Doug Abbott framed the delay as design work: the platform wanted customers to understand the products and encounter the "right level of friction" before investing. The company's current ETN page warns that the instruments are volatile and high-risk and that investors could lose all the money they commit.

The U-turn mirrors the FCA's own trajectory. The regulator lifted its retail prohibition on qualifying crypto ETNs on Oct. 8, 2025, classifying them as restricted mass-market investments that must appear on the Official List and trade through a recognized UK investment exchange, with appropriateness assessments, customer categorization, cooling-off periods and prominent risk warnings mandated — and incentives prohibited. Crypto derivatives remain off-limits. Hargreaves Lansdown charges a 0.35% annual platform fee for holding the ETNs, capped at £12.50 per month, plus dealing charges from £3.95 to £6.95 — separate from each product's management fee. The notes trade during London Stock Exchange hours only, without the 24/7 access of crypto exchanges. Institutional crypto exposure keeps expanding globally, and the UK retail layer is the newest one. Wu Blockchain flagged the launch on X (Twitter).

What crypto ETNs do and don't give investors

Structurally, the products offer price exposure without ownership: investors purchase a note issued by a financial institution rather than buying Bitcoin or Ether directly, with the issuer arranging custody of the underlying cryptocurrency. Customers control no private keys, manage no wallets and cannot withdraw the represented assets — dependencies that shift the risk profile from self-custody concerns to issuer, custodian, venue and platform risk, with product fees and spreads meaning returns can differ from the underlying asset's movement. BlackRock listed its Bitcoin product on the London Stock Exchange shortly after the retail restrictions changed, part of the regulated wave the ETN lineup now represents.

Demand remains the open question, and the platform is honest about it. Hargreaves Lansdown says it has received consistent customer enquiries, particularly from experienced investors, but interest has not yet established how many eligible clients will actually invest. Other platforms describe British retail uptake as modest, and restrictions keeping newly purchased crypto ETNs out of conventional stocks-and-shares ISAs may cap demand. Still, the launch gives the UK's largest broker's customers a regulated route to Bitcoin and Ether price exposure without opening an exchange account — the same mainstreaming push visible in consumer products elsewhere — and it converts the platform's "not an asset class" verdict into a quiet admission that its customers wanted the asset class anyway. Neighboring Ireland still excludes crypto from tax-advantaged accounts, making Britain's regulated retail route the regional outlier worth watching.
