About Yat Siu

Yat Siu (蕭逸) is a Hong Kong-based technology entrepreneur and investor who serves as Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Animoca Brands, one of the most active investors and builders in Web3, digital assets, and blockchain gaming. His technology career began long before blockchain: he started at Atari Germany in 1990, moved to Hong Kong in 1995, and founded Outblaze in 1998, an early pioneer of multilingual white-label web and messaging services. After selling Outblaze's messaging unit to IBM in 2009, he pivoted the company into a digital-entertainment incubator — one of the incubated ventures became Animoca Brands, co-founded in 2014. Under Siu's leadership, Animoca Brands evolved from mobile gaming into blockchain gaming, NFTs, tokenization, and broad Web3 investing, building a portfolio of more than 600 companies. Siu is particularly associated with the concept of digital property rights, arguing that blockchain-based ownership can let users hold transferable economic stakes in digital environments. His current 2026 work extends into artificial intelligence, agentic systems, stablecoin and payment infrastructure, real-world asset tokenization, and the emerging agentic economy.

Early Life & Education

Yat Siu was born in 1973 and raised in Vienna, Austria, in a family with Hong Kong and Taiwanese connections. He studied at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna, where he trained in cello, flute, and piano. His formal musical education gave him a disciplined creative foundation before he shifted into computing and internet technology.

From Music to Technology

Siu's transition from conservatory training to technology was unconventional. According to his official Animoca Brands biography, he began his technology career at Atari Germany in 1990, working in the video-game industry during a formative era for interactive entertainment. This early exposure to consumer software and gaming would later inform his work at Animoca Brands.

Move to Hong Kong & Hong Kong Cybercity

In 1995, Siu moved to Hong Kong, entering Asia's nascent consumer internet industry. That same year he established Hong Kong Cybercity (later known as Freenation), an early free web-page and email provider that served the Asian market during the first wave of internet adoption. The service offered free hosting and email at a time when internet access was still expanding across the region.

Founding Outblaze

In 1998, Siu established Outblaze, a Hong Kong-based internet-services company that became an award-winning pioneer of multilingual white-label web services. Outblaze developed white-label email, messaging, and web infrastructure for telecoms, portals, and enterprises, expanding internationally across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The company also established ThinkBlaze, a research arm investigating socially meaningful issues in technology.

Outblaze and IBM

In 2009, Siu sold Outblaze's messaging unit to IBM. The transaction involved the messaging business specifically — not the entirety of Outblaze. Following the sale, Siu pivoted Outblaze into an incubator of projects and companies focused on digital entertainment services and products. This shift toward digital entertainment and gaming laid the groundwork for the ventures that would eventually become Animoca Brands.

Co-Founding Animoca Brands

Animoca Brands was created in 2014, co-founded by Yat Siu and David Kim. The company was spun out from Animoca (the original mobile-gaming entity) and listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) in January 2015 under the ticker AB1. Robby Yung served as the first CEO and led the company's public listing. In its early years, Animoca Brands operated primarily in mobile games and digital entertainment, publishing titles such as Crazy Kings and Crazy Defense Heroes before its strategic pivot to blockchain.

Animoca Brands Moves Into Blockchain

Beginning around 2017–2018, Animoca Brands began materially investing in and developing blockchain-enabled games and digital assets. A defining moment came in August 2018, when Animoca Brands acquired Pixowl — the developer behind The Sandbox — for approximately $4.875 million in cash and stock. Pixowl had been founded in 2011 by Arthur Madrid and Sébastien Borget; under Animoca Brands it was reimagined as a blockchain-based 3D virtual world. The Sandbox's founders, Madrid and Borget, are the actual creators of the project — Yat Siu is not a founder of The Sandbox. SAND is The Sandbox ecosystem's native token and is not a personal token of Yat Siu.

Digital Property Rights

One of Siu's central public themes is the concept of digital property rights. His thesis is that in the Web2 model, platforms typically control digital assets, accounts, and access, capturing most of the economic value. In the Web3 model, blockchain can allow users to hold transferable ownership claims over digital assets — in-game items, collectibles, identity, and network participation — enabling them to benefit economically from the networks they help build. Siu frames this as a philosophical and strategic position rather than a settled consensus, and he frequently discusses the associated risks, including token volatility, regulatory uncertainty, and speculation.

The Open Metaverse

Siu advocates an open metaverse — digital environments built around interoperability, user-owned assets, open networks, and decentralized economies. He distinguishes this concept from any single product or platform called the metaverse, emphasizing that an open metaverse is a set of principles (ownership, portability, composability) rather than one company's virtual world.

NFTs & Digital Ownership

Animoca Brands became a major investor and developer in NFTs because Siu's thesis treats NFTs as a mechanism for digital ownership — representing gaming assets, collectibles, membership, and digital identity. The company's portfolio spans NFT infrastructure, marketplaces, and gaming projects. Siu does not describe NFTs as guaranteed investments, and the sector has experienced significant market cycles.

Blockchain Gaming

Animoca's historical strategy combined games, blockchain, digital ownership, and tokenized assets. Siu has publicly acknowledged the challenges facing blockchain gaming, including user experience, speculative behavior, regulatory scrutiny, token sustainability, and the need for game quality comparable to traditional titles. The company's approach has evolved from early NFT-centric experiments toward more sustainable game economies and infrastructure.

Web3 Investment Portfolio

As of August 2026, Animoca Brands' official material states it has invested in over 600 companies and projects across digital-asset sectors. Selected notable investments include Ledger, Kraken, Consensys, LayerZero, Humanity Protocol, and other blockchain infrastructure, gaming, wallet, DeFi, and digital-asset companies. These are investments — not subsidiaries — and Animoca's relationship with each portfolio company varies (minority investment, strategic investment, partnership, or joint venture). Animoca does not own or control every company in its portfolio.

Tokenization & Real-World Assets

Animoca's 2026 strategy increasingly includes tokenization of both digital and real-world assets. In May 2026, NUVA — a curated institutional-grade RWA marketplace co-created by Animoca Brands and Nuva Labs — launched on Ethereum, connecting tokenized real-world assets (including private credit and Treasury-linked products) to decentralized finance. NUVA is led by Anthony Moro, a former BNY executive; Yat Siu's role is as an Animoca Brands executive, not as the personal issuer of NUVA. Animoca presents tokenization as a strategic opportunity without claiming every asset should be tokenized.

Stablecoins & Payments

Animoca's 2026 investment activity includes stablecoin and payment infrastructure. Anchorpoint Financial — a joint venture among Standard Chartered, Animoca Brands, and HKT — was granted a stablecoin issuer licence by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and began the rollout of HKDAP, a Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin. Anchorpoint is a joint venture, not Animoca Brands itself; the stablecoin issuer licence is held by the Anchorpoint entity. Animoca has also invested in AllScale for stablecoin payment infrastructure. These are corporate activities, not personal holdings of Yat Siu.

AI & the Agentic Economy

Animoca's 2026 strategy increasingly centers on artificial intelligence and agentic systems. In February 2026, Animoca Brands and Ethoswarm (CryptoSlam's cloud-based agentic AI technology) launched Animoca Minds, a platform for persistent AI agents with their own identity, memory, and cognition aimed at non-technical users. Siu's involvement is as an Animoca Brands executive; he is not the sole founder of Animoca Minds. Siu argues that the emerging agentic economy — in which AI agents can reason, perform tasks, and interact with services — will require identity, permissions, and economic rails that Web3 and digital ownership can provide. He has publicly argued that AI can increase the importance of human creativity rather than simply replace human contribution, presenting this as his strategic view rather than established labor-market fact.

Hong Kong Web3 Policy

In July 2023, Siu was appointed to Hong Kong's Task Force on Promoting Web3 Development, established by the Financial Secretary to provide recommendations on the sustainable and responsible development of Web3 in Hong Kong. In June 2025, the Hong Kong Government announced the reappointment of 20 non-official members of the Task Force for a two-year term effective July 1, 2025. This is an advisory public-policy role; Siu is not a Hong Kong regulator, government minister, or legislator.

Proposed Nasdaq Listing

In November 2025, Animoca Brands announced a proposed reverse merger with Currenc Group Inc. (Nasdaq: CURR), a fintech company. Under the proposed structure, Animoca shareholders would own approximately 95% of the combined company, and the resulting entity would operate under the Animoca Brands name. As of August 2026, this transaction has not yet closed. In May 2026, Currenc Group announced an extension of the exclusivity period to June 30, 2026, with closing targeted for the third quarter of 2026 and a long stop date of December 31, 2026 (extendable by six months upon mutual agreement). The transaction remains subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. Yat Siu did not found Currenc Group. Until the transaction independently closes, Animoca Brands is not yet a Nasdaq-listed company.

What Is Yat Siu Working on Now?

As of August 2026, Siu's current work centers on his role as Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Animoca Brands, leading the company's strategy across digital asset investing, Web3 and Web4, digital property rights, AI and agentic systems, tokenization, stablecoins and payments, and real-world assets, while pursuing the proposed Nasdaq listing and participating in Hong Kong Web3 public policy. Outblaze is treated as a historical founder identity rather than his primary current role.

Why Yat Siu Matters in Crypto

Siu's significance stems from helping transform Animoca Brands from a traditional mobile-gaming company into a major force across blockchain gaming, digital assets, NFTs, Web3 investment, tokenization, and decentralized ownership. His public thesis — that internet users should be able to own and economically benefit from digital assets and networks — has made him one of the most visible advocates of digital property rights. Animoca's large investment portfolio has also made the company an influential capital provider across the Web3 ecosystem. Siu is not the founder of The Sandbox, CryptoKitties, Ethereum, or Web3, nor the inventor of NFTs.
