Bio
Mustafa Al-Bassam is a Co-Founder of Celestia and Chairman & CEO of Celestia Foundation. He is one of the leading figures behind the modular blockchain thesis, which separates data availability, consensus and execution into specialized layers rather than combining them in a monolithic chain.
Al-Bassam completed doctoral research at University College London (UCL) on securely scaling blockchain base layers, building on earlier work in the Chainspace research project. He co-founded Celestia with Ismail Khoffi and John Adler. Celestia's original focus on data availability has since evolved; its current 2026 direction — branded "Vision 2.0" — encompasses custom high-throughput blockchains, private blockspace (Fibre) and broader market infrastructure.
A note on titles: the current Celestia homepage lists Al-Bassam as Chairman & CEO of Celestia Foundation, while Nick White serves as Co-Founder & CEO of Celestia Labs. An earlier Celestia blog author page described Al-Bassam as "Co-founder and CEO of Celestia Labs"; this appears to be a stale description. This profile uses the Foundation title as the most current designation, acknowledging the conflict. The TIA token is the native asset of the Celestia network; its economics are governed by the network, not personally by Al-Bassam.
