Bio
Jeff Yan came to crypto through trading. Before co-founding Hyperliquid, he worked in high-frequency markets and built a crypto market-making business. That experience shaped the problem he wanted to solve: how to make onchain trading feel responsive and straightforward enough for people accustomed to centralized exchanges.
From quantitative trading to crypto
Yan studied mathematics and computer science at Harvard, graduating in 2017. He then joined Hudson River Trading, where he worked in quantitative trading. In a later interview, he described the job as a place to apply mathematical thinking to real markets.
His interest in Ethereum developed around 2018. Reading its technical documentation helped him see blockchains as infrastructure for financial activity, with possibilities beyond transferring tokens.
He subsequently founded Chameleon Trading, a crypto market-making business. When he appeared on the Flirting with Models podcast in May 2023, the discussion moved from the practical details of high-frequency trading to the decentralized exchange he was building: Hyperliquid. The connection between those two subjects runs through his career. Trading gave him a close view of how markets worked; building an exchange meant taking responsibility for the infrastructure beneath them.
Why he helped build Hyperliquid
Hyperliquid grew out of a team already familiar with crypto markets. Its official documentation describes a move into DeFi during the summer of 2022, followed by frustration with the market design, technology and user experience of existing platforms.
Yan has also described the collapse of FTX as reinforcing the importance of self-custody. For him, the challenge was to make decentralized trading usable enough that people would choose it for the experience as well as the underlying principles.
The team’s response was to build a blockchain with an order-book exchange integrated into it. Rather than treating trading as one application among many, Hyperliquid made exchange performance a central design consideration.
A trading platform with its own infrastructure
Hyperliquid is built on its own Layer 1 blockchain. Its architecture includes HyperCore, which handles core trading functionality, and HyperEVM, which supports general-purpose smart contracts.
HyperEVM is part of the same blockchain and shares its consensus system with HyperCore. This matters because developers can build applications that interact with the network’s trading infrastructure. The project’s scope therefore extends beyond the interface someone sees when placing an order.
The distinction between the network, its contributors and its token is useful here. Hyperliquid Labs contributes to development, while HYPE is the ecosystem’s token. Readers looking specifically at the token can explore Bitnxt’s HYPE and Hyperliquid review.
His role at Hyperliquid Labs
Hyperliquid’s documentation identifies Yan and his Harvard classmate, known publicly as iliensinc, as the leaders of Hyperliquid Labs. It describes Labs as a core contributor to the ecosystem and states that the organization is self-funded, without external capital.
That background helps explain the emphasis on building a product around trading needs. Yan brings experience from both traditional market making and crypto markets, while the wider team works on the systems needed to support the exchange and its applications.
His role should be understood within that broader effort. A founder’s public profile can make a project easier to recognize, but the operation of a blockchain involves more than one person.
The questions around Hyperliquid’s growth
Hyperliquid’s development also brings questions about how decentralized markets are supervised. In October 2026, Bitnxt reported on Hyperliquid’s Singapore base and regulatory oversight, examining the distinction between a company’s location and financial authorization.
For readers following Yan, this is part of the wider story: building trading infrastructure involves decisions about access, market design and accountability alongside performance. Those questions provide useful context for understanding the project beyond its token price.
