Bio
Hayden Adams is the founder and CEO of Uniswap Labs and the creator of the Uniswap Protocol — the decentralized automated market maker (AMM) that pioneered permissionless, on-chain token exchange on Ethereum. Adams created the Uniswap Protocol in 2018 after transitioning from mechanical engineering to Ethereum development, drawing inspiration from an AMM concept articulated by Vitalik Buterin in a Reddit post. Uniswap has since grown into one of the largest decentralized exchanges by trading volume globally.
It is important to distinguish between the entities in the Uniswap ecosystem: Uniswap Labs is the private company Adams leads, which builds the Uniswap interface, developer tools, the Uniswap Wallet, and UniswapX; the Uniswap Protocol is the set of open-source, immutable smart contracts deployed on-chain; the Uniswap DAO governs the protocol via UNI token holder votes; and the Uniswap Foundation is a separate nonprofit that supports ecosystem development. Uniswap Labs does not own or control the decentralized protocol.
Education & Early Career
Adams studied mechanical engineering at Stony Brook University. After graduating, he worked briefly as a mechanical engineer at Siemens. He left Siemens in 2017 and, at the suggestion of former Ethereum Foundation engineer Karl Floersch, began learning Ethereum and Solidity development. Within months, he was building what would become Uniswap.
Creating the Uniswap Protocol (2018)
Adams launched Uniswap v1 on Ethereum mainnet in November 2018, implementing a constant-product AMM formula (x × y = k) that allowed any user to trade ERC-20 tokens without an order book or custodian. The original concept of an on-chain AMM using the constant-product formula was described in a blog post by Vitalik Buterin; Adams engineered the first practical implementation. Uniswap v1 received a grant from the Ethereum Foundation to support its development.
Protocol Versions
Uniswap v2 (May 2020) added ERC-20/ERC-20 pairs, price oracles, and flash swaps.
Uniswap v3 (May 2021) introduced concentrated liquidity, allowing liquidity providers to allocate capital within custom price ranges — significantly improving capital efficiency, though increasing complexity for LPs. v3 also introduced multiple fee tiers. Protocol designs in v2 and v3 involved collaborative engineering teams at Uniswap Labs, not Adams alone.
Uniswap v4 was deployed and introduced a hooks architecture allowing developers to add custom logic to liquidity pools at key lifecycle points (before/after swaps, position creation, etc.). Uniswap v4 also uses a singleton contract model and flash accounting for gas efficiency improvements.
UNI Token & Governance
In September 2020, Uniswap launched the UNI governance token, distributing a portion retroactively to past users. UNI holders participate in the Uniswap DAO, which governs the Uniswap Protocol's fee parameters, treasury, and protocol upgrades. UNI does not entitle holders to protocol fee revenue by default; any fee switch requires a governance vote. As of 2026, governance discussions around fee switches and DAO structure remain active.
Uniswap Labs Products (Current 2026)
UniswapX is a permit-based order routing system that allows fillers to compete to execute swaps at better prices than on-chain AMMs, including cross-chain intent-based swaps. Unichain is an Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain built by Uniswap Labs using the OP Stack, designed to be a primary home for DeFi liquidity. Its current 2026 network status, architecture and mainnet readiness should be verified from unichain.org directly. Uniswap Wallet is a self-custody mobile wallet for ERC-20 and multi-chain assets.
Regulation & Legal
In April 2024, the SEC issued a Wells Notice to Uniswap Labs, indicating it was considering enforcement action. Uniswap Labs publicly contested the notice and argued the protocol's decentralized nature placed it outside SEC jurisdiction. The outcome of any formal SEC proceeding should be verified from current SEC and Uniswap Labs disclosures; do not treat a Wells Notice as a final determination.
Funding
Uniswap Labs raised a Series A (approximately $11M, Andreessen Horowitz led, 2020) and a Series B (approximately $165M, Polychain Capital led, 2022). Exact valuations are from reported figures; verify from official disclosures.
What Is Hayden Adams Working on Now? (August 2026)
- CEO, Uniswap Labs (Current) — Leading product development across the Uniswap interface, Uniswap Wallet, UniswapX, and Unichain.
- Uniswap Protocol (Current — independent, governed by Uniswap DAO) — Adams and Uniswap Labs contribute code but do not control the protocol.
- Unichain (Current — verify exact mainnet status from unichain.org).
- Siemens engineering (Historical).

Key Contributions
Uniswap Protocol v1
Created and launched the first practical constant-product AMM on Ethereum mainnet (November 2018), enabling permissionless, orderbook-free token swaps.
Concentrated Liquidity (v3)
Led Uniswap Labs' engineering team in delivering v3's concentrated liquidity model, substantially improving capital efficiency for liquidity providers.
Hooks Architecture (v4)
Introduced a hooks-based design in v4 allowing developers to build custom pool logic, extending the AMM's programmability.
UniswapX Intent Routing
Pioneered intent-based order routing that aggregates on-chain and off-chain liquidity, reducing swap costs and enabling cross-chain execution.
UNI Governance Token
Launched the UNI token in September 2020 with a retroactive airdrop to users, establishing on-chain governance for the Uniswap Protocol via the Uniswap DAO.
