Bio
Gavin Wood is a British computer scientist and one of the most consequential engineers in blockchain history. He co-founded Ethereum alongside Vitalik Buterin and others, authored the Ethereum Yellow Paper — the formal specification of the Ethereum Virtual Machine — and created the Solidity programming language in collaboration with the Ethereum team. After serving as Ethereum's first CTO, Wood founded Parity Technologies (originally EthCore) and established the Web3 Foundation, which funded the creation of Polkadot.
Polkadot, Wood's primary long-form project, is a heterogeneous multi-chain network that enables separate blockchains — parachains — to communicate and share security through a central Relay Chain. Wood published the original Polkadot whitepaper in 2016. The network launched its mainnet in 2020 and has since evolved substantially, with coretime-based resource allocation replacing the parachain slot auction model.
Wood stepped back from day-to-day Parity operations in 2022 to focus on Polkadot architecture, but returned as CEO of Parity Technologies in August 2025 and remained in that role as of August 2026. His current focus includes delivery of the post-2025 Polkadot architecture, Polkadot Hub (an evolution of Asset Hub), PolkaVM — a new RISC-V based virtual machine — and the JAM (Join-Accumulate Machine) protocol, which is in active development and has not reached full mainnet deployment as of August 2026.
Education & Early Career
Wood studied computer science at the University of York, where he completed both his undergraduate degree and a PhD. His doctoral research focused on music visualisation and human-computer interaction — a field far removed from blockchain, but representative of his interest in formal systems and user experience. Before entering crypto, he worked in software development, including work on C++ and systems programming.
Ethereum Co-Founder (2013–2015)
Wood joined the Ethereum founding group in 2013 and became the project's first CTO. His most significant direct contribution was the Ethereum Yellow Paper, published in 2014, which provided the formal mathematical specification of the EVM — enabling independent developers to implement Ethereum clients. He also contributed substantially to the early development of Solidity, though the language was a collaborative effort involving multiple contributors including Christian Reitwiessner.
Parity Technologies / EthCore
In 2015, Wood co-founded EthCore with Jutta Steiner and others, which later became Parity Technologies. Parity built one of the leading Ethereum client implementations (Parity Ethereum/OpenEthereum), Substrate (a framework for building blockchains), and Polkadot's full node software. Parity Technologies is a private company separate from both the Web3 Foundation and the Polkadot decentralized network.
Web3 Foundation
Wood founded the Web3 Foundation, a Swiss nonprofit, to steward Polkadot's development and fund the broader Web3 ecosystem. The Foundation holds DOT tokens and provides grants but does not control the decentralized Polkadot network, which is governed by DOT token holders via its on-chain governance system (OpenGov).
Polkadot Architecture
Polkadot uses a shared-security model in which a central Relay Chain coordinates consensus and finality for connected parachains. Validators on the Relay Chain are bonded with DOT and randomly assigned to validate parachain blocks. Polkadot's NPoS (Nominated Proof-of-Stake) system allows DOT holders to nominate validators. The network transitioned to a coretime-based model in 2024–2025, replacing fixed parachain slot auctions with a market for blockspace.
Kusama is a canary network — a live, value-bearing experimental chain — that Wood created to test Polkadot features before deploying them to mainnet. It runs independently with its own token (KSM) and governance.
PolkaVM & JAM (2025–2026)
PolkaVM is a new virtual machine based on the RISC-V instruction set that aims to offer better performance and correctness guarantees than the EVM for Polkadot-native smart contracts. JAM (Join-Accumulate Machine) is a proposed successor to the current Relay Chain design, introducing a new execution model and data availability layer. As of August 2026, JAM is in active specification and testnet phases; it has not been deployed to Polkadot mainnet.
OpenGov
Polkadot's OpenGov system replaced the earlier Council/Technical Committee model. It allows any DOT holder to propose or vote on referenda across multiple tracks, with voting power determined by token holdings and voluntary lock periods. Gavin Wood, as a major DOT holder and founder figure, can participate in governance like any other token holder but does not hold formal unilateral control over the network.
Security Note
In November 2017, a critical vulnerability in the Parity multi-signature wallet library was exploited, permanently freezing approximately 513,774 ETH in contracts. A subsequent accidental trigger by a user froze an additional estimated 500,000+ ETH. Parity Technologies responded with transparency reports and proposed EIP-999 to recover the funds; the Ethereum community rejected the proposal. The ETH remains frozen. These events are attributable to the Parity Ethereum wallet software, not to the Polkadot network.
