About Joyce Kim
Joyce Kim is the Co-Founder and former Executive Director of the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF), and the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of SparkChain Capital, a blockchain-focused venture fund. She co-founded the Stellar network and its supporting foundation with Jed McCaleb, applying her background in law, technology entrepreneurship, and consumer internet to the challenge of building open financial infrastructure for global payments and financial inclusion.
Before entering the blockchain space, Kim worked as a lawyer and was involved in technology entrepreneurship, including co-founding or leading consumer internet ventures such as Soompi, a Korean pop culture media platform, and simplehoney. Her multi-disciplinary background — spanning legal, product, and business development — shaped her approach to building Stellar as both a technical protocol and a mission-driven organization focused on economic inclusion.
Kim served as Executive Director of the Stellar Development Foundation during its founding phase. Her current role at SDF is that of Co-Founder in the historical sense; she is not the current Executive Director or operational leader of the Foundation, which is led by separate current management. For 2026, Stellar operates under independent leadership with its own ongoing protocol development.
Stellar Development Foundation & Stellar Network
The Stellar Development Foundation is a nonprofit organization that supports the development and growth of the Stellar network and its ecosystem. Stellar is a blockchain network designed for fast, low-cost cross-border payments and asset tokenization, with a focus on serving underbanked populations and enabling financial institutions to move money efficiently across borders. The Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP) uses a federated Byzantine agreement model that allows for fast finality without proof-of-work mining.
XLM is the native digital asset of the Stellar network, used for transaction fees and reserve requirements. The SDF holds a significant XLM reserve for ecosystem development and grant programs; this reserve is governed by the Foundation's board and is distinct from Joyce Kim's personal holdings.
As of 2026, the Stellar network continues active development. Key areas include Stellar Smart Contracts (formerly Soroban, based on the WebAssembly/Rust-compatible Soroban VM), asset tokenization for real-world assets, stablecoin issuance, and on/off-ramp infrastructure for emerging markets. These developments are attributed to the current SDF team and Stellar developer community, not to Kim personally.
SparkChain Capital
SparkChain Capital is a blockchain-focused venture fund co-founded by Joyce Kim in a managing-partner role. The fund focuses on investing in blockchain, crypto, and decentralized technology companies. Current fund status, portfolio, and Kim's active title should be verified against the most current direct and authoritative sources, as investment fund activities and partner status can change. Kim's SparkChain role represents her current professional engagement with the blockchain ecosystem in an investor capacity following her founding-era Stellar work.
Key Contributions
Stellar Co-Founding
Co-founded the Stellar network and Stellar Development Foundation with Jed McCaleb, establishing one of the earliest blockchain networks focused on open financial infrastructure and cross-border payments.
Financial Inclusion Mission
Helped shape Stellar's nonprofit foundation model and mission focus on financial inclusion and access for underbanked populations globally, distinguishing it from commercially-oriented blockchain projects.
Legal & Governance Framework
Applied legal expertise to the formation of the Stellar Development Foundation as a nonprofit, establishing governance and mission structures for the organization's early phase.
SparkChain Capital
Co-founded SparkChain Capital to support early-stage blockchain and crypto companies through venture investment, continuing engagement with the ecosystem as an investor and advisor.
Multidisciplinary Crypto Founding
Brought a rare combination of legal, entrepreneurial, and product background to crypto founding at an early stage of the industry, demonstrating that technical expertise is not the only relevant credential for blockchain organization leadership.
Why Joyce Kim Matters in Crypto
Kim's co-founding of Stellar demonstrated that blockchain networks could be built explicitly around a financial inclusion and public-good mission rather than purely commercial objectives, a design choice that has influenced how nonprofit blockchain foundations are structured. Stellar has become a significant payment-focused blockchain network used for remittances, stablecoin issuance, and asset tokenization in emerging markets. Kim's transition from operator to investor through SparkChain Capital is also representative of how first-generation crypto founders contribute to the next generation of ecosystem development — applying operational experience to identifying and funding new blockchain ventures.
