About Jed McCaleb

Jed McCaleb is one of the most prolific serial founders in technology and blockchain history. He co-founded the Stellar payment network and currently serves as Founder, Board Chair, and Tech Fellow at Vast — a commercial space station company. McCaleb is also on the board of directors and leadership of the Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) in his capacity as co-founder and Chief Architect.

It is essential to distinguish the separate organizations in McCaleb's history: eDonkey (peer-to-peer file sharing), Mt. Gox (sold before its collapse), Ripple/OpenCoin (departed, is not a current Ripple executive), Stellar (co-founded, remains involved), Astera Institute (philanthropy/science), and Vast (commercial space). These are independent entities and must not be conflated.

Early Career: eDonkey2000

In the early 2000s, McCaleb created eDonkey2000 (later the eDonkey Network), one of the largest peer-to-peer file-sharing platforms of its era. The software and protocol were used widely before legal pressure from the Recording Industry Association of America led to a settlement and the closure of the eDonkey servers in 2005. eDonkey's protocol, however, continued in eMule and other implementations maintained by third parties.

Mt. Gox

In 2010, McCaleb created Mt. Gox as a platform for trading Magic: The Gathering cards, then quickly pivoted it into one of the world's first Bitcoin exchanges. In 2011, he sold Mt. Gox to Mark Karpelès. The 2014 Mt. Gox collapse, in which approximately 850,000 BTC were lost, occurred under Karpelès's management. McCaleb was not involved in the management decisions that led to the collapse; events after the 2011 sale should not be attributed to him.

Ripple / OpenCoin

McCaleb was a co-founder of Ripple (originally OpenCoin) alongside Chris Larsen, Arthur Britto, David Schwartz, and others. He departed Ripple around 2013–2014. He is not a current executive, officer, or board member of Ripple Labs. His departure involved a settlement covering his XRP holdings over a multiyear distribution schedule, details of which are documented in public legal filings. Do not use speculative net-worth figures based on stale XRP holding assumptions.

Founding Stellar (2014)

In 2014, McCaleb co-founded the Stellar Development Foundation with Joyce Kim. Stellar is an open-source, decentralized blockchain network designed for fast, low-cost cross-border payments and asset issuance. The Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP), which uses Federated Byzantine Agreement (FBA) rather than Proof of Work, was designed by David Mazières of Stanford University — not solely by McCaleb. McCaleb's role was central in founding the organization and shaping its payment-focused mission.

Stellar Technology

The Stellar network uses SCP for consensus, allowing participants to reach agreement without a central authority by choosing their own sets of trusted nodes (quorum slices). XLM (Lumens) is the native asset used to prevent spam and facilitate multi-currency transactions via path payments. Anchors — financial institutions or fintech companies — issue fiat-backed tokens on Stellar for cross-border settlement. The Stellar network and the SDF are distinct: SDF is a non-profit that supports development and adoption, while the network is decentralized.

Lightyear / Interstellar

McCaleb co-founded Lightyear.io, a for-profit company building commercial products on Stellar. Lightyear later merged with Chain to form Interstellar, which subsequently became part of the broader Stellar ecosystem of commercial entities.

Astera Institute

McCaleb founded the Astera Institute, a research and philanthropic organization focused on transformative scientific and technological projects across areas including biotechnology, computing, and space.

Vast (2021–Present)

McCaleb founded Vast in 2021. Vast is developing commercial space stations; its Haven-1 module is designed for the first commercial space station in low Earth orbit. As of August 2026, McCaleb holds the titles of Founder, Board Chair, and Tech Fellow at Vast. Verify exact current status of Haven-1 and other Vast missions from vastspace.com directly.
