What the MiniPay Card is
MiniPay is Opera's self-custodial stablecoin wallet on Celo, which grew to more than 16 million activated wallets across 65+ countries since launching in 2023. The MiniPay Card, launched in June 2026 in collaboration with Visa, turns those stablecoin balances into spendable money: a digital Visa debit card accepted at over 175 million merchant locations worldwide, with the merchant seeing an ordinary Visa transaction.
How it is built
The card runs on Gnosis Pay's infrastructure, which bridges MiniPay's on-chain balances to Visa's network, and is issued through Monavate's regulated card issuing business. That combination matters for safety: the card is not a bare smart contract, it sits inside a licensed issuing and payments stack.
Cashback in gold
Rather than points, MiniPay pays cashback in assets. In most markets across Africa, Latin America and Asia the reward is Tether Gold (XAUt), a token backed one-to-one by physical gold in a Swiss vault; in other markets the cashback accrues in stablecoins such as USDT and USDC. Rewards land automatically each month, and the qualifying rate reaches 5% on eligible purchases.
Self-custody and practicalities
The card is unusual in that your balance stays in your own wallet until the moment you tap - MiniPay describes it as self-custodial, with instant freeze and unfreeze. There are no activation fees and no deposit fees, and funds transferred in from other wallets are spendable as soon as they land. It is issued as a digital card, added to Apple Pay or Google Pay in under a minute, and availability is limited to the selected markets listed in the app.
MiniPay spends stablecoins from a self-custodial Celo wallet and is designed for users outside the usual card markets. The Eversend Card serves a similar audience through a licensed African fintech, and the Morse Card pairs a dollar account with a free Visa that waives foreign transaction fees.
