Zcash ETF Hits $500M AUM, Absorbs 3% of Supply

Zcash coins beside an ETF growth chart showing $500 million in assets and 3% of Zcash supply absorbed.

Summary :

  • Grayscale's Zcash ETF (ZCSH) crossed $500M AUM in 14 days of trading.

  • The fund holds 550,000+ ZEC, about 3% of circulating supply.

  • ZEC traded past $1,180, up 4%, with roughly $1B daily volume.

  • Zcash is now the 10th-largest crypto at a $20B market cap.

  • Bitcoin rebounded from a $77,666 low toward $78,900.

Grayscale's Zcash ETF crossed $500 million in assets two weeks after listing, and the mechanism behind the number is the story: ZCSH now holds more than 550,000 ZEC, roughly 3% of Zcash's 16.9 million circulating supply, permanently removed from market float in 14 days. On top of a $100 million seed from DCG International Investments, the fund has drawn over $70 million in cumulative net inflows since its Aug. 25 NYSE Arca debut. ZEC traded past $1,180 on Wednesday, up 4% in 24 hours on about $1 billion of volume, putting Zcash's market capitalization at $20 billion and the coin in 10th place overall.

Do the arithmetic on the supply side and the move stops looking like ordinary ETF demand. A fund absorbing 3% of a circulating supply in two weeks creates a squeeze dynamic Bitcoin ETFs never manage, and the privacy angle makes it stranger still: institutions are buying regulated exposure to a coin whose entire value proposition is untraceable transfers. The X account @ZcashETF put it as a demand-for-privacy milestone, and it is one, though "conviction" is doing heavy lifting in that framing.

"We're proud to share The Zcash ETF $ZCSH has crossed $500M+ in AUM. The only $ZEC fund in the world now holds over 550,000 $ZEC. This milestone reflects continued investor conviction in Zcash and the demand for privacy in the digital asset ecosystem." — @ZcashETF, Sept. 8

The Rally Rode an ETF, Not the Network

Be clear about what moved. ZEC's run to a $20 billion market value tracks the listing and the supply lockup, not a usage surge or a protocol event. That makes the position structurally fragile in a specific way: if inflows stall after this week's macro tests, the float that the ETF removed comes back as sell pressure from the same class that created the squeeze. The altcoin ETF complex's growth to $345 million in AUM showed the category could gather assets; ZCSH shows the category can move underlying prices, which is a different and riskier fact.

Bitcoin, for contrast, barely noticed the week. BTC dropped below $78,000 on Tuesday to a $77,666 low before buyers pushed it back toward $78,900 in Asian hours Wednesday, leaving it under 2% higher over seven days. Wintermute's Jasper De Maere reads the tape as rates, not crypto: "The tape is now trading rates rather than anything crypto-specific. We expect some more volatility as we move into the back of this week as the final macro data comes in before the FED's rate decision. $75,000 and $82,000 remain the levels into the 15-16 FOMC."

Oil at $100 Is the Macro Wall

The macro backdrop is the least friendly in months. Brent crude is pushing toward $100 a barrel after U.S. strikes on Iranian tankers near Kharg Island and retaliatory attacks on Saudi refining capacity, gold sits near $4,407 an ounce, and the 10-year Treasury yield hovers near 4.8% with the 2-year above 4.34%. CME FedWatch prices roughly a 60% chance of a hike at the Sept. 15-16 FOMC, the same hike odds that flattened Bitcoin after the August jobs print. Thursday brings PPI, Friday CPI, with core CPI expected to ease to 2.4%. It is into that wall that ZCSH gathered $70 million in two weeks, while Bitcoin's own ETF flows remain $1 billion below break-even for the year.

Skepticism, briefly: a 3% supply lockup is a bull argument exactly until it is a concentration argument, and Thursday's PPI print matters more to ZEC holders than any privacy thesis.

Watch whether ZCSH's inflow line survives a hot CPI. The privacy trade has its institutional wrapper now, and the first real stress test is scheduled for Friday morning.
