Bitcoin Falls Below $80K as Jobs Beat Lifts Rate Hike Odds

Bitcoin falls below $80,000 as stronger U.S. jobs data increases expectations of a potential rate hike.

Summary :

  • US payrolls rose 162,000 in August, nearly triple the 56,000 forecast.

  • Bitcoin fell from $82,262 to below $80,000 after the release.

  • Rate hike odds for September jumped to 61% from 52% beforehand.

  • Trump demanded lower rates and threatened to halt deficit trade.

  • About $251 million in leveraged crypto positions were liquidated.

Bitcoin fell below $80,000 after a blowout US jobs report lifted rate hike odds for the Federal Reserve's September meeting — a sharp reversal for a rally that had carried the asset to its strongest month in nearly two years, and a reminder that the macro tide which floated August's recovery can just as quickly pull it back.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday that nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000 in August against economist forecasts of 56,000, with the unemployment rate holding at 4.1% and revisions adding a combined 55,000 jobs to June and July. Bitcoin's first reaction was positive — an intraday high near $82,262 — before selling accelerated within minutes of the release, dragging the price from roughly $81,600 to $79,800. Approximately $251 million in leveraged crypto positions were liquidated in the four hours around the release, with long positions accounting for about $216 million.

Rate hike odds climb as the jobs data lands

The market's real judgment came in rate futures. The implied probability of a quarter-point hike at the Fed's Sept. 15–16 meeting rose to 61% from 52% before the data, with Treasury yields climbing in sympathy — the policy-sensitive two-year yield gained five basis points to 4.38%, the 10-year rose to 4.776%, the dollar index added 0.2% and gold fell 1.2%. Citigroup responded by pushing its forecast for the Fed's next cut from late 2026 to June 2027, now expecting three quarter-point reductions across June, September and December 2027. For crypto, the mechanics are unsentimental: higher rates raise the yield on risk-free government debt, competing directly for the capital that might otherwise sit in a volatile, non-yielding asset. Waller's earlier comments had cooled hike expectations, and Friday's data reopened the exact question he tried to close.

Bret Kenwell, U.S. investment analyst at eToro, framed the dynamic as a "good news is bad news" reading — with the labor market near full employment, the Fed's remaining concern is inflation, and strong hiring reduces the case for cheap credit. The irony writes itself: the strongest jobs print of the year arrived hours after the strongest Bitcoin ETF day since January, when $731 million flowed into US spot funds. Institutional conviction, it turns out, has a macro ceiling.

Trump's rate demand meets the Fed's mandate

President Trump used the report to renew his pressure campaign, writing on Truth Social: "Lower the interest rates because the U.S.A. is a much stronger credit than it was just a short time ago!" He went further, tying monetary policy to trade: "LOWER THE RATE OR I'LL STOP TRADING WITH COUNTRIES WITH WHICH WE HAVE A DEFICIT," and calling on Fed officials to "be patriots for a change." The threat did not identify affected countries, a timetable, or a legal mechanism — and the Federal Reserve sets rates independently through the FOMC, based on employment and price stability rather than White House instruction. Markets treated it accordingly: hike odds rose even as the demand was published.

For Bitcoin specifically, the setup is a test of the August rally's foundations. Fidelity warned that the bear market may not be over despite the 25% August gain, and the $83,450 breakout target sits just above the 365-day moving average that analysts treat as the bull-bear divide. Friday's rejection below $80,000, driven by data rather than crypto-specific news, strengthens the cautious case: until the Fed's September decision, Bitcoin's direction is largely rented from the rates market. The jobs report was the first notice that the rent can go up.
