Fed Rate Hike Odds Fall to 38% as Waller Awaits CPI

Federal Reserve rate hike odds fall to 38% as markets await CPI inflation data.

Summary :

  • September Fed rate hike odds fell to 38% on Polymarket after Waller's remarks.

  • Waller said he could support holding rates if August inflation shows further progress.

  • August PPI lands Sept. 10 and CPI lands Sept. 11, days before the Sept. 16 decision.

  • The Fed held rates at 3.50%-3.75% in July by a 9-3 vote.

  • BTC rallied above $80,000 as Treasury yields declined and the dollar weakened.

Fed rate hike odds collapsed to 38% on Polymarket after Governor Christopher Waller said cooling August inflation could persuade him to support holding rates steady — a stunning reversal from the 72% pricing earlier in the week that dragged crypto markets sharply higher in a single session.

In published remarks on Sept. 3, Waller made the August inflation reports the decisive input for the September Federal Open Market Committee meeting. With employment near its maximum sustainable level, he does not expect the upcoming jobs report to differ much from recent data. The Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index, by contrast, will carry the weight of his vote — and the market repriced instantly.

Waller's conditional pause changes the math

"If there is continued progress toward our 2 percent goal, then I am willing to support holding the policy rate at its current level," Waller said, leaving the door open in both directions: "If there is evidence that progress toward 2 percent inflation reversed in August, a small adjustment in our stance would help ensure that it resumes." The federal funds target currently sits at 3.50% to 3.75%, where the July meeting held it by a 9-3 vote over the objections of Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari and Lorie Logan, who preferred an immediate quarter-point increase.

The governor described his position as conditional rather than committed — a deliberate communication strategy he says lets households, companies and investors prepare for different outcomes. The timing is tight: the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the Producer Price Index on Sept. 10 and the Consumer Price Index on Sept. 11, both at 8:30 a.m. Eastern, less than a week before the Fed's Sept. 16 announcement. July's Personal Consumption Expenditures index — the Fed's preferred measure — ran at 3.7% annually, and energy costs tied to the U.S.-Iran conflict add uncertainty to the August figures. The official schedule is available through the Federal Reserve's FOMC calendar.

From 72% to 38% in two days

The swing in expectations has been violent. Earlier in the week, Governor Barr's warning that the Fed should "act decisively to raise rates" had pushed hike odds to 72%, following Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole address. After Waller outlined the conditions under which he could support a pause, CME FedWatch — which had priced a September increase above 66% — moved closer to 50%, and Polymarket's September contract fell to 38%, with the probability of no change rising to roughly 62%. A separate contract still places the chance of at least one hike during 2026 at about 64%, meaning traders expect the fight to continue into the October and December meetings even if September passes quietly.

The two governors' positions are less opposed than they sound. Both identified inflation as the test for September; Barr set a higher bar for patience, Waller a lower one. Neither committed to a vote, and the July dissents show the committee remains genuinely split. For a market that spent August recovering from an oil-driven inflation scare, the shift matters more for its speed than its size.

Crypto reprices on liquidity hopes

Bitcoin responded immediately, rallying roughly 4.5% to an intraday high near $81,370 and retesting the resistance zone that capped its August advance, while two-year and ten-year Treasury yields declined and the dollar weakened — the classic liquidity-friendly mix for risk assets. Higher policy rates push up yields on government debt and money-market instruments, sapping demand for volatile assets that produce no income, so every dovish comment directly relieves pressure on crypto valuations.

The ETF channel shows the stakes. U.S. spot Bitcoin funds absorbed about $3.04 billion across nine consecutive positive sessions from Aug. 17 through Aug. 27 before recording a $201.9 million withdrawal on Aug. 28, demonstrating how sensitive institutional flows are to the rate narrative. The UK gilt market tells the same story — sovereign yields drive crypto's marginal buyer. With two inflation prints and one employment report standing between now and the decision, the only honest summary of the Fed rate outlook is Waller's own framing: everything depends on the data, and the market will swing with every decimal.
