Fed Rate Hike Odds Hit 72% as Barr Warns on Inflation

Fed rate hike odds reach 72% as Barr warns about persistent inflation risks.

Summary :

  • Fed rate hike odds on Polymarket hit 72% after Governor Barr's inflation warning.

  • Barr said the Fed should "act decisively to raise rates" if inflation does not moderate.

  • A separate contract prices a September quarter-point hike at roughly 57%.

  • The FOMC held rates at 3.50%-3.75% in July, with three members dissenting for a hike.

  • August jobs data lands Sept. 4, days before the Sept. 15-16 FOMC meeting.

Fed rate hike odds have climbed to 72% on Polymarket after Governor Michael Barr warned that the central bank should raise rates decisively if inflation fails to moderate, tightening the squeeze on risk assets from Bitcoin to tech stocks ahead of the September meeting.

Speaking at the Second Chance Lending Forum in Washington on Sept. 1, Barr said inflation has now sat above the Fed's 2% goal for more than five years, leaving policymakers to judge whether current rates are still restrictive enough. His prepared remarks give the hike camp another voting voice on the Federal Open Market Committee — as a Board member, Barr votes at every meeting.

Barr draws the line on inflation

"If trends in the data give me some confidence that inflation is moderating on a path to 2 percent, then I think we can take a bit more time to assess our policy stance," Barr said. "However, if inflation appears not to be moderating sufficiently, then I think we should act decisively to raise rates." The Fed's own preferred measure, the Personal Consumption Expenditures index, puts headline inflation at 3.7% and core at 3.3% — well above target.

Barr's account of how the U.S. got here is notable. Inflation fell from a peak above 7% in 2022 to slightly above 2% in 2024, then progress stalled in 2025. He cited tariffs, the Middle East conflict and spending tied to the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence as fresh sources of price pressure, alongside persistent inflation in core non-housing services. He described the economy as solid — resilient consumer spending, a stable labor market and AI-fueled investment — which removes the usual excuse for cutting rates when growth wobbles.

Fed rate hike bets climb as officials pile on

The Fed rate hike market has repriced fast. Polymarket traders now assign a 72% probability to at least one increase before the end of 2026, up from 68% after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole address on Aug. 28 and 64% in early August. A separate contract places the chance of a quarter-point move at the Sept. 15-16 meeting at about 57%. CME-based estimates tracked a similar path, with September hike odds jumping from 39.9% on Aug. 21 to roughly 57% by month-end as the two-year Treasury yield climbed to around 4.31%.

Warsh set the tone in Wyoming, saying policymakers must be confident inflation is moving to the objective "clearly and at sufficient speed" and describing the 2% PCE goal as a "firm, fixed target." He noted that 54% of the 199 goods and services in the PCE basket recorded price increases above 3% over the previous 12 months. The July 28-29 meeting already exposed the split: most members backed waiting, but Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari, Cleveland's Beth Hammack and Dallas's Lorie Logan preferred an immediate quarter-point increase.

What a hike does to crypto liquidity

A quarter-point move would lift the target range from 3.50%-3.75% to 3.75%-4.00%, and the crypto market has already been processing the possibility. Bitcoin traded near $78,700 as the repricing unfolded, having fallen from above $81,000 to a low of $76,857 following Warsh's speech. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs still recorded $924.5 million in net inflows for the week, though investors pulled $201.9 million on Aug. 28 as the hawkish message landed. Higher policy rates ripple through Treasury yields and the dollar, reducing the appeal of assets that produce no fixed income — a dynamic also visible in the U.K. gilt selloff.

BTSE Chief Operating Officer Jeff Mei said in an Aug. 31 report that higher rates could reduce the liquidity available to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. The mechanism is straightforward: tighter policy drains excess liquidity from the financial system, and crypto remains one of the most liquidity-sensitive asset classes. Oil adds another complication — Brent moved above $90 on Aug. 31 as U.S.-Iran tensions threatened shipments near the Strait of Hormuz, feeding the inflation fire the Fed is trying to put out.

The data that decides everything

Before the Sept. 15-16 meeting, officials will see the August employment report on Sept. 4 — payrolls, unemployment and wages — followed by Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index releases. Those prints will effectively settle whether Barr's condition for patience is met, and prediction markets will keep swinging with each release. The official schedule is published on the Federal Reserve's FOMC calendar.

For crypto investors, the setup is uncomfortable: solid growth, sticky inflation, an oil shock in progress and a central bank openly discussing the first hike of a new tightening cycle. The 72% figure is a market price, not a promise — but the direction of travel has been one-way for a month, and every hawkish speech makes the September decision harder to dodge.
