Bitcoin ETF Inflows Hit $731M, Biggest Day Since January

Bitcoin ETF inflows reach $731 million, marking the biggest single-day inflow since January.

Summary :

  • U.S. Bitcoin ETFs drew $730.9 million, the best day since January.

  • BlackRock's IBIT absorbed $454 million — about 62% of the total.

  • ARKB added $137.7 million and FBTC $74.4 million.

  • CryptoQuant says short covering, not fresh demand, drove the rally.

  • A decisive close above $83K would confirm a new bull market.

Bitcoin ETF inflows hit $731 million on Thursday — the strongest single day since January — as Bitcoin reclaimed the $80,000 level, with BlackRock's IBIT alone absorbing nearly two-thirds of the total and pushing the funds' momentum past the doubts that shadowed the August rally.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $730.9 million in net inflows, the largest daily haul since Jan. 14, when the funds attracted $843.6 million, according to SoSoValue data. The surge followed $101.2 million in inflows on Wednesday and landed as Bitcoin moved back above $80,000 after a week spent ranging between roughly $76,000 and $81,000. The timing is no coincidence: Waller's comments cooled rate-hike expectations, the dollar weakened, and the institutional bid returned within days.

Bitcoin ETF inflows concentrate in IBIT again

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust, the largest U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF by net assets, led with $454 million — about 62% of the category total, according to Farside Investors. ARK Invest and 21Shares' ARKB followed with $137.7 million, and Fidelity's FBTC drew $74.4 million. Only two funds recorded outflows: VanEck's HODL at $19.6 million and WisdomTree's BTCW at $5.2 million. The concentration mirrors the pattern documented across Ethereum ETFs, where one issuer's distribution machine dominates flows — though notably, IBIT alone drew a larger $503 million as recently as Aug. 20, meaning Thursday's category-wide record was broader than any single fund's push.

The question every flow-watcher is asking is whether the buying is organic. CryptoQuant, in a Thursday report, remained cautious: the rally was driven largely by traders closing short positions rather than opening new longs, pointing to limited fresh spot demand. Bitcoin holders realized 23,000 BTC in net profits on Aug. 21 — the highest daily amount this year — and roughly 110,000 BTC in total since Aug. 19, reflecting substantial profit-taking under the surface of the advance. ETF inflows and profit-taking can coexist: older coins move to meet new fund demand, transferring supply from self-custody to wrappers.

The $83,000 bull market threshold

CryptoQuant's framework puts the next test at Bitcoin's 365-day moving average, around $82,300 — a level that has historically marked the divide between bull and bear markets. Bitcoin reached $81,400 on Aug. 28 before retreating below it. "A decisive close above $83K would confirm the new bull market," the firm said, while a rejection could trigger a pullback toward the 200-day moving average near $69,000. That maps neatly onto the technical picture: the falling-wedge breakout targets $83,450, and Fidelity's bear-market caution rests on the same unresolved question. The flow data adds a new dimension to the debate: the largest ETF day in eight months arrived exactly as price approached the threshold, suggesting institutions are positioning ahead of the test rather than behind it.

Two readings of Thursday's number are possible. The optimistic one: $731 million is what pent-up institutional demand looks like when the macro backdrop turns — and with CPI due Sept. 11 and the Fed deciding Sept. 16, the backdrop could keep improving. The cautious one: flows follow momentum, and a category that took in $731 million on a short-covering rally can give it back just as fast if the $83,000 test fails. Both agree on the signal to watch. Bitcoin's move above its 365-day moving average — or its rejection there — will tell the market whether the biggest ETF day since January was the beginning of conviction or a well-timed chase.
