Stablecoin rails never sleep. The FX market under them does, and that gap is about to become the industry's most expensive flaw. TransFi CEO Raj Kamal points out that over 70% of fiat flows converting into USD stablecoins originate in non-USD currencies, while BIS data shows 99.4% of fiat-backed stablecoin market cap is pegged to the dollar. Every non-American user is therefore running a currency conversion, whether they notice it or not.
The problem is timing. Global FX turnover averages $9.6 trillion a day, up 28% from 2022, with the dollar on 89% of trades, but that liquidity lives inside regional banking hours. Blockchains settle 24/7/365. Convert EUR to a USD stablecoin on a Sunday and you are pricing against market makers who hold inventory risk overnight with no hedging venue open, so the spread widens and depth thins. Kamal: "A payment rail that is always open has limited value if a large conversion becomes materially more expensive at the weekend."
Everyone Is Launching the Wrong Stablecoin
The industry's answer so far is more currencies: Revolut launched EURR on Aug. 26 in Denmark, Poland and Portugal, issued by Stripe-owned Bridge, a 1-euro Ethereum-based token. Local-currency stablecoins are multiplying, and Kamal expects "liquidity concentration to matter much more than the headline number of stablecoins in circulation." That is the correct read. Each new peg fragments depth; the pair that matters, your local currency into deep USD liquidity, still routes through the dollar stablecoin as the bridge asset, the role the 21-bank consortium targeted when it challenged USDT and USDC's dominance. The 70% non-USD conversion flow also means double fees for many users: local currency to USD stablecoin to local currency again, a cost pipeline that erodes the savings stablecoin payments advertise.
Corporate treasuries will feel it first. B2B settlement is the growth engine here, and a treasurer moving size on a weekend currently chooses between waiting for Monday's banking hours, defeating the point of 24/7 rails, or paying an unquantified spread premium. The winners of this cycle will be gateways that net flows internally before touching spot markets, the structural advantage yield-bearing stablecoin account players are already building around, and the fragmentation risk hanging over multi-chain liquidity plays like USDT0.
Watch the weekend spreads. The first venue to publish tight, guaranteed off-hours FX pricing for stablecoin conversion wins the corporate treasury market without launching a token at all.
