Ripple unlocked a billion XRP on Sept. 1, roughly $1.38 billion at the $1.38 to $1.39 trading range, and the price response was to keep climbing through the high $1.30s. The monthly unlock ritual that once reliably knocked XRP down is now a non-event, and the reason why is a lesson in how escrow actually works that most headlines never teach.
The mechanics first. The 1 billion arrived via three programmatic releases, 500 million, 400 million and 100 million, reducing the on-ledger escrow balance to 31.28 billion XRP, about 31% of the original 100 billion supply. EscrowFinish transactions deliver time-locked tokens to designated operational wallets; they do not sell anything. Historically Ripple re-escrows 600 million to 800 million of each release into fresh long-term contracts, so the net monthly circulation increase typically lands between 200 million and 400 million XRP, a fraction of the headline. Retail panic on unlock day is, structurally, a misreading of an accounting entry.
Why the XRP price ignored the unlock this time
The demand side of the ledger is doing the heavy lifting. XRP logged 28.5% to 30.8% gains across August, and the XRP Ledger's usage metrics went vertical: active addresses hit 2.26 million in August, more than double July's 1.02 million, while the 7-day average of daily active addresses set an all-time high of 1.34 million, eclipsing the 1.22 million record from March 2025. TVL rose from $32.31 million to $44.42 million, and exchange reserves fell to a 7-year low of 1.6 billion XRP, roughly half the 3.2 billion peak from October 2025. Coins leaving exchanges during a price rally is the opposite of distribution pressure. Add the settlement context, the SEC appeals were jointly dismissed in August 2025 with Ripple paying $125 million in civil penalties, and RLUSD supply passing $2.3 billion across Ethereum and XRPL, and the market's indifference to the unlock looks rational rather than complacent.
The skeptics' point survives though: XRPL's $44.42 million TVL remains negligible against its address growth, which means the activity is settlement and transfer traffic, not DeFi depth. Altcoin derivatives are booming this month, yet XRP's rally has been spot-led, which is healthier but also thinner than the derivatives chase in names like ZEC. If the usage is institutional settlement, the price is riding fundamental volume. If it is transfer churn, the address record is a vanity metric.
What to actually watch on unlock days
The escrow countdown now has a visible end date worth modeling: at roughly 1 billion per month against 31.28 billion remaining, the final lock expires inside three years, and every monthly cycle shrinks the overhang that has capped XRP's valuation narrative since 2017. The re-escrow proportion is the number to track; historically 60% to 80% returns to escrow, but if Ripple begins retaining more in operational wallets as RLUSD and institutional settlement grow, the sell-side supply assumption changes materially. Stablecoin rails expanding across settlement networks and the macro tape's rate sensitivity frame the next test: XRP above $1.40 with usage records intact is a different asset than the escrow-capped token of the last two years. The Sept. 11 CPI print and the Fed's Sept. 16 decision will do more to XRP's price than the October unlock will. That, more than anything, is how you know this market has finally stopped trading the calendar.
