Polymarket Brings Five-Minute Crypto Markets to US Traders

Polymarket US now offers five-minute price-direction contracts for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and XRP. The shorter format intensifies competition with Kalshi’s 15-minute markets, while making settlement rules, trading fees and execution prices especially important for participants.

Polymarket Five-Minute Crypto Markets Reach US Traders

Key Takeaways

  • Polymarket’s official US platform lists five-minute Up/Down contracts for BTC, ETH, SOL and XRP.
  • Reviewed US contracts use CF Benchmarks indices and averaged prices to determine outcomes.
  • Winning contracts redeem for $1; that payout includes the amount originally paid.
  • The shorter window creates more trading opportunities, but fees and spreads can quickly reduce returns.

Polymarket five-minute crypto markets are now available on the platform’s US service, giving traders a shorter window to predict whether Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana or XRP will move higher or lower. The contracts add another competitive dimension to a market where Kalshi already offers 15-minute crypto predictions.

The appeal is straightforward: select a direction, take a position and wait for a brief trading window to close. But the economics require more attention than the simple Up/Down interface suggests. A correct prediction does not guarantee a worthwhile return at every entry price.

What Has Polymarket Added?

The official Polymarket US crypto listings show five-minute markets for all four assets, alongside longer-duration contracts.

Participants buy exposure to an outcome rather than ownership of the underlying cryptocurrency. Buying a Bitcoin Up contract, for example, does not put bitcoin in the trader’s wallet.

This is a comparison of those particular formats, rather than a complete comparison of either platform’s product range.

Readers exploring the wider sector can also consult Bitnxt’s Polymarket global platform review. The distinction between the global venue and Polymarket US matters: their rules and operating structures should not be treated as interchangeable.

How Polymarket Five-Minute Crypto Markets Settle

The US Bitcoin contract reviewed for this article uses CF Benchmarks’ Bitcoin Real-Time Index. It resolves to Up when the closing reference value is greater than or equal to the opening reference value. An exact tie therefore goes to Up.

The platform calculates each endpoint using the average of 60 index observations collected during the preceding minute. For Bitcoin, the resulting value is rounded to two decimal places.

Reviewed Ethereum and Solana contracts follow the same general averaging approach, using their respective CF Benchmarks indices. Ethereum values are rounded to two decimal places; Solana values to four.

That detail can decide a trade. A price displayed on an unrelated exchange may differ from the official settlement benchmark. Watching a single last-second price tick is therefore insufficient to establish which side wins.

It also explains why reporting about Chainlink-based settlement on Polymarket’s international products should not automatically be applied to these US contracts.

The $1 Payout Is Not $1 of Profit

A winning contract redeems for $1. The purchase price comes out of that return.

For example, buying 100 contracts at 50 cents costs $50 before fees. If the position wins, the settlement payout is $100. If it loses, the contracts pay nothing.

Polymarket US’s published fee schedule, effective October 19, lists a standard taker fee of approximately $1.74 for 100 contracts purchased at 50 cents, before applicable rebates.

Using that example, a winning position held to settlement produces approximately $48.26 in profit after the entry fee. A losing position costs approximately $51.74. These figures assume the stated execution price and exclude any other applicable costs.

The practical consequence is easy to miss: winning half of equally sized trades at a 50-cent entry price would lose money after fees. A shorter countdown does not change that arithmetic.

The bid-ask spread—the gap between available buying and selling prices—also affects execution, particularly when entering and exiting before settlement.

Bitnxt’s Take: Execution Matters More as the Clock Shrinks

At Bitnxt, we see this expansion as a competition for trading activity and repeat engagement. Five-minute contracts provide more frequent opportunities to participate, but frequency alone offers no evidence that users will achieve better results.

Our earlier review of Limitless Exchange examined another platform offering short-duration price markets. The recurring questions are similar: how much liquidity is available, what price can a trader actually obtain, and which rules determine the final payout?

There is also a useful contrast with Bitnxt’s crypto market recap ahead of the Federal Reserve decision. A broad view about monetary policy or Bitcoin demand may develop over days or months. A five-minute contract asks whether a specific benchmark finishes above a specific starting value.

Those are different forecasting problems. Being right about Bitcoin’s longer-term direction does not establish an advantage over the next five minutes.

What Will Show Whether the Expansion Works?

The meaningful follow-up will be evidence of sustained participation, executable liquidity and competitive trading costs across all four assets.

For users, clear settlement explanations will be equally important. Five minutes describes the measurement window; it should not be mistaken for a guarantee that funds become available immediately when that window ends.

Polymarket has expanded the choices available to US crypto traders. Whether the new format delivers lasting value will depend on the quality of trading inside those shorter windows.
