Polygon Co-Founder Opens Nepal Crypto Relief Channel

Polygon co-founder launches a crypto donation channel to support relief efforts in Nepal.

Summary :

  • Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal opened a crypto donation channel for Nepal.

  • Donations convert to Nepalese rupees for the PM's Disaster Relief Fund.

  • USDC is accepted via Ethereum or Polygon.

  • Blockchain for Impact pledged $100,000 to the campaign.

  • The death toll from the Aug. 26 floods has passed 750.

Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal has launched a Nepal crypto relief channel that converts stablecoin donations into Nepalese rupees for the government's official disaster fund — a working demonstration of the "stablecoins move money fast" thesis at exactly the moment money needs to move fast, with Blockchain for Impact pledging $100,000 to open the campaign.

Nailwal announced the drive on Sept. 4, opening a donation route for people seeking to support relief and reconstruction after catastrophic flooding. The system does not send digital assets to a government wallet; it collects USDC through Ethereum or Polygon, converts proceeds into Nepalese rupees, and delivers the local currency into the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund through recognized financial channels. "Stablecoins work best when money has to move fast to people who need it," Nailwal wrote. Polygon's Open Money Stack provides the routing, bridging and conversion infrastructure, with Coinme and Cross River Bank supporting the payment pathway — and Engage Nepal, a US-based 501(c)(3) led by former US Ambassador to Nepal Scott DeLisi, handling collection and accounting.

What the Nepal crypto relief campaign solves

The disaster gives the campaign its urgency. A glacier collapse in the Himalayan region on Aug. 26 sent ice, rock and debris through mountain river systems, flooding settlements and destroying roads, bridges and power infrastructure. By Aug. 30, authorities had reported at least 750 deaths and more than 3,000 missing across Nepal and China's Tibet region — 734 of the deaths and 2,498 of the missing in Nepal alone. The Red Cross estimated more than 90,000 people affected, with communities cut off from food, clean water and emergency services and workers believed trapped in damaged hydropower tunnels. Nepal's own donation page lists no cryptocurrency address, which is exactly why this structure matters: it builds a compliant bridge between crypto holders and a government fund that only accepts rupees through official channels.

The design answers the two objections that usually kill crypto charity drives. First, volatility: accepting a dollar stablecoin rather than Bitcoin or Ether means the donated amount does not swing with the market — the same dollar-digitization logic now powering business banking products. Second, transparency: public blockchain records show when a donation enters the listed wallet and when assets move onward, even though onchain data cannot prove how rupees are spent after they enter a bank account. Nepal's government has separately warned citizens against unauthorized payment codes and personal accounts claiming to collect relief money — a live risk in any disaster, and one a published, verifiable wallet address helps counter.

A pattern of crypto-funded relief — with precedents

The campaign is also a reunion of crypto philanthropy's most proven team. Nailwal created the India COVID-Crypto Relief Fund in 2021, which received 50 trillion Shiba Inu tokens from Vitalik Buterin, valued at about $1.2 billion at the time of transfer; in June 2023, the pair directed another $100 million toward COVID-19 research and medical infrastructure, $90 million of it in USDC. That fund was later reworked into Blockchain for Impact — the organization now pledging $100,000 to Nepal. The sector's broader response shows the same instinct: Ripple committed $300,000 on Aug. 29 to World Central Kitchen and Mercy Corps, and the Solana Foundation with NFT marketplace Mallow auctioned nine advertising spaces on Solana's X profile image for USDC, raising $166,946.50 routed through the same Engage Nepal pipeline.

The honest caveat is the one the structure itself admits: crypto is the front door, not the building. The last mile still runs on conversion services, US banks and Nepalese government channels — stablecoin rails increasingly interlock with traditional finance rather than replace it. But that is the realistic pitch for crypto relief: not a parallel financial system, but a faster, verifiable on-ramp for global donors whose money would otherwise arrive by wire in days — when a campaign can route it in hours. With institutional stablecoin infrastructure scaling this year, Nepal is becoming the template for how the next disaster gets funded: stablecoins in, rupees out, and a public ledger in between.
