MENA Crypto Volume Triples to Estimated $350B a Year

MENA crypto trading volume surges as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoin activity expands across the region.

Summary :

  • MENA crypto volume tripled to an estimated $350 billion annually.

  • Turkey alone accounts for nearly $200 billion of that total.

  • Saudi Arabia leads growth at 154%, with Qatar up 120%.

  • UAE processed about $150 billion, 30% of it in dollar stablecoins.

  • Egypt P2P bitcoin trading surged over 300% on currency devaluations.

Annual crypto volume across the Middle East and North Africa has tripled to an estimated $350 billion, per a Bitcoin Policy Institute report published Sept. 4, and the headline number is the least interesting part. The interesting part is why: two very different MENAs are using crypto for two very different reasons, and only one of them is speculative.

Turkey, the region's largest market, recorded nearly $200 billion in annual on-chain volume. Egypt's peer-to-peer bitcoin trading jumped more than 300% following EGP devaluations. Those are survival numbers: inflation hedges and capital flight, not yield farming. The other MENA is institutional. The UAE processed roughly $150 billion in 2025, with the institute estimating 38% in bitcoin, 22% in ether and 30% in dollar stablecoins, while Dubai's VARA granted Flowdesk a full broker-dealer license and Kraken preliminary approval. Saudi Arabia leads regional growth at 154% year over year, with Qatar up 120%.

"The Bitcoin Policy Institute said the Middle East and North Africa has become one of the world's fastest-growing crypto markets, with annual on-chain transaction volume reaching $350 billion." — Wu Blockchain (@WuBlockchain), September 6, 2026

Reading MENA crypto numbers without the hype

Now the skepticism, because this report deserves it. The $350 billion covers 2025-2026 as a multi-year estimate, not an audited single-year total, and the institute published no underlying dataset or methodology. The Saudi and Qatar growth rates trace to a September 2024 Chainalysis report, not fresh data. On-chain volume also counts churn: market-maker rotations and inter-exchange wallet transfers inflate the figure without representing net new capital. Treat $350 billion as an order of magnitude, not a fact you can take to an allocator.

What is verifiable is the structural story. High-inflation states, Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon, Iran, turn to BTC and dollar stablecoins to preserve savings, while the Gulf states build regulated venues and RWA programs under Saudi Vision 2030. That is not one market. It is two, moving in the same direction for opposite reasons, and both reasons are durable.

The stablecoin twist nobody mentions

Here is the angle the report underplays: 30% of UAE volume is dollar stablecoins, which means the fastest-growing crypto region on Earth is dollarizing through crypto rails. When an Egyptian trader buys USDT after a devaluation, the transaction strengthens the dollar's grip on the region's savings, not any local currency's. The same institutional stablecoin build-out happening globally is running ahead fastest where fiat is weakest, and liquidity infrastructure like USDT0's Stellar expansion keeps lowering the friction. A dirham-backed AE Coin now converts into dollar-backed USDU under a regulated framework, which is a settlement rail, not a de-dollarization strategy.

For the market's next leg, watch Egypt and Turkey, where devaluation pressure keeps converting savers into crypto users monthly, and watch the UAE's licensed venues, which are becoming the region's institutional on-ramp. The $350 billion figure will be revised, up or down, with better data. The trend underneath it, money moving to dollar-denominated rails wherever local money fails, is already priced into behavior. The question worth asking at the next sovereign-debt scare in the region: who absorbs that flow when it doubles again, local regulators or offshore exchanges? Right now the offshore exchanges are winning.
