Kraken wants you to trade OpenAI and Anthropic at 5x leverage before either company files a single public share. The exchange re-promoted its pre-IPO perps futures on Sept. 6, cash-settled contracts tracking its PreMarket Synthetic Index, and the pitch is exactly what it sounds like: pure synthetic exposure to private valuations, on a crypto exchange, from Bermuda.
"ANTHROPIC pre-IPO perpetual futures (PF_ANTHROPICXUSD) live with up to 5x leverage. Long or short. Hedge an existing Anthropic position. Multi-collateral margin. No expiry." — Kraken (@krakenfx), September 6, 2026
How Kraken's pre-IPO perps actually work
The mechanics deserve scrutiny before anyone touches them. Because private shares do not trade on a public order book, these perps price off Kraken's own synthetic index, built from its order book's supply and demand with exponential smoothing, and mark prices are clamped within a 0.25% band. Base leverage is 5x on 20% initial margin, stepping down to roughly 3.3x and then 2x as size grows, with hourly funding. There is no arbitrage mechanism connecting the perp to actual private secondary shares, so illiquidity can detach the contract from any fundamental reality for hours at a time. The contracts carry no ownership, voting rights, dividends or claims, and Kraken holds no affiliation with either AI company.
The jurisdictional wall tells the real story. US, EEA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand residents are locked out; UK access is professional clients only. The offering entity is Payward Digital Solutions Ltd., licensed in Bermuda. So the liquidity that sets "the market's view" of OpenAI and Anthropic comes from offshore crypto traders, not Silicon Valley secondary markets, and that is worth remembering when Anthropic's actual IPO roadshow reportedly slips toward mid-October. Synthetic crypto perps are sentiment instruments, and sentiment about a $2 trillion IPO does not always rhyme with an S-1.
The hedge claim that doesn't survive contact
Kraken markets the contracts partly as a hedge for existing private positions. That claim is flimsy. Private share transfers are restricted and illiquid, so a holder cannot arbitrage a perp dislocation against the underlying even if they spot one, and a 9% one-day plunge like the one Anthropic-linked perps saw on Coinbase's competing product at its June debut cannot be closed for riskless profit. What remains is a leveraged bet on an index that Kraken effectively controls, with auto-deleveraging risk when order books thin.
None of this makes the product useless. Pre-IPO perps are the only place a non-accredited offshore trader can express any view on the two most valuable private companies on Earth, and the broader crypto perps expansion keeps proving demand exists. Industry groups are already lobbying the SEC for rules allowing regulated US versions. But be clear-eyed: until an IPO prints a real reference price, these markets are a sentiment casino with a volatility floor, and when the S-1 finally lands, every synthetic print will converge violently toward filing reality. If you trade them, size for that day, because it is coming, and the 0.25% clamp will not save anyone from what the real market decides OpenAI is worth.
