Coinbase Tokenized Stocks Go Live on Base With 1:1 Backing

Coinbase Tokenized Stocks Go Live on Base With 1:1 Backing
Coinbase launched tokenized stocks on Base with 1:1 backing, enabling onchain equity trading through its layer-2 network.

Coinbase has launched tokenized stocks on its Base network with 1:1 backing, allowing users to trade traditional equities onchain through the exchange's layer-2 infrastructure.

How It Works

The tokenized stocks are backed one-to-one by actual shares held by Coinbase, meaning each token represents direct ownership of the underlying equity. Users can buy, sell and transfer tokenized shares through the Base network, taking advantage of blockchain settlement speeds while maintaining exposure to traditional financial instruments.

The launch represents a significant step in bringing traditional securities onto public blockchain infrastructure. Tokenized stocks offer several advantages over conventional brokerage trading, including near-instant settlement, fractional ownership and 24/7 trading potential. The Base network's low fees and Ethereum compatibility make it a practical choice for hosting these assets.

Why Base?

Base is Coinbase's layer-2 network built on the OP Stack, designed to provide fast and low-cost transactions while benefiting from Ethereum's security. By launching tokenized stocks on Base, Coinbase can offer onchain equity trading to its user base while maintaining the regulatory compliance infrastructure it has built as a publicly traded company.

The move also positions Base as more than just a DeFi platform, expanding its utility into traditional finance. The network has already seen significant growth in DeFi activity, and adding tokenized stocks could attract a different class of users interested in onchain exposure to equities.

The Broader Tokenization Trend

Coinbase's launch aligns with a broader trend of traditional asset tokenization. Real-world asset deposits in DeFi protocols have tripled to $7.4 billion in 2026, and major financial institutions are moving from exploring tokenization to deploying capital through blockchain infrastructure.

Several other companies have pursued tokenized equities, but regulatory uncertainty has limited widespread adoption. Coinbase's status as a regulated public company gives it advantages over purely crypto-native platforms, as it can leverage existing securities licenses and compliance infrastructure.

Regulatory Implications

The launch raises questions about how securities regulators will treat tokenized stocks. The SEC has been clarifying the treatment of digital assets, and tokenized equities could fall under existing securities regulations rather than crypto-specific frameworks. Coinbase's compliance infrastructure may help navigate these requirements, but the regulatory landscape remains evolving.

The ERC-8391 proposal, published separately on Aug. 24, suggests the Ethereum ecosystem is also developing technical standards for asset status checks on tokenized stocks, indicating that the infrastructure for compliant onchain equities is maturing across multiple platforms.
