Bitcoin Supply in Profit Nears Bull Transition Level

Bitcoin supply in profit approaches the bull transition level, signaling a potential shift toward a bullish market phase.

Summary :

  • Over 71% of Bitcoin's circulating supply is now in profit.

  • The historical bear-to-bull transition threshold is 74.7%.

  • Long-term holder supply is the No. 1 driver of low volatility.

  • Altcoin market cap ex-BTC/ETH/stables added $51.2B since early September.

  • Bitfinex: ETF inflows through Sept. 11 CPI are this week's marker.

Over 71% of Bitcoin's circulating supply is in profit at $78,000, and the number that matters next is 74.7%. That is the historical mean for supply in profit, and crossing it has typically marked the transition from bear to bull regimes, according to Bitfinex analysts. Bitcoin is 3.7 percentage points from that line. Getting there requires clearing a wall of latent sell-side liquidity the summer quietly built.

The mechanics of that wall deserve attention. When Bitcoin last traded above $82,500 in May, supply in profit was 67%. Now, at $78,000, it is 71%, because coins accumulated all the way down to the $68,400 short-term holder cost basis during the summer left a larger class of holders who are profitable at lower prices. Identical price levels now trigger a greater volume of profitable coins. Bitfinex's framing: "A deeper pool of latent sell-side liquidity whenever the market tests previous local highs." Every retest of $82,000 meets more sellers than the May visit did.

Volatility Is Low Because the Holders Changed

Glassnode ran a factor analysis on what drives Bitcoin's unusually subdued one-month realized volatility, and the answer reorders the usual suspects. Long-term holder supply ranked first, ahead of illiquid supply, then liveliness and absolute funding rates. Market capitalization ranked far lower. In Glassnode's words, "The strongest driver of low vol is not market cap. It is who holds the coins." The regime read is double-edged: LTH lockup compresses volatility and supports the base, but it also means the marginal seller at local highs is disproportionately the summer class taking profit, not forced leverage. This is a quieter market than the one that ran on the jobs-print flush below $80,000, but quiet cuts both ways when altcoin open interest sits at 21-month highs and the spot market thins.

Meanwhile the alt complex is doing its own thing. Total altcoin market cap excluding Bitcoin, Ether, and stablecoins has grown $51.2 billion since early September, surpassing mid-August levels, capital rotation that can lift index-level sentiment while Bitcoin itself consolidates. Bitfinex stays deliberately measured on the headline asset: "Our view on BTC remains constructive, but the conditions for a sustained advance have not yet been met... the evidence supports continued consolidation with an upside bias, rather than a confirmed breakout."

Two Catalysts, One Week

The macro stack is why patience is rational. The U.S. 2-year Treasury yield holds above 4.34%, and the week carries two tests: the September 9 Treasury buyback and the September 11 CPI release. Bitfinex sets the marker plainly: "Whether ETF inflows stay positive through the 9 September buyback and the 11 September CPI, even while the two-year holds above 4.34%." Positive flow through a hot CPI would be the decoupling signal; a reversal would confirm the ceiling. It is the same scoreboard logic that has made weekly ETF inflow tracking the market's favorite macro proxy.

Skepticism checklist: 71% supply in profit is close to the regime line, but proximity is not momentum, and the 74.7% mean has false positives in choppy regimes. The sell wall above $80,000 is measured from a summer cost basis that only holds as long as those holders actually held.

Watch the supply-in-profit line against this week's CPI. A hot print that fails to push supply in profit down, or a cool print that sends it through 74.7%, either way you get the regime answer everyone is positioning for.
