One App to Rule Them All: Inside Binance’s Bid to Become Crypto’s “Super App” — Exchange News crypto news
Binance CEO Richard Teng outlined plans to transform Binance into a financial super app, combining crypto, payments, tokenized assets, and traditional finance while emphasizing compliance and global expansion.

The world's largest crypto exchange no longer wants to be just a crypto exchange. In a series of recent interviews, Binance CEO Richard Teng has laid out an ambitious vision: to transform Binance into a financial “super app” — a single platform where users can trade, earn, pay, send money, and invest across not just cryptocurrencies but stocks, commodities, and more. It's a bold reach for a company with a complicated past, and it says a lot about where the crypto industry believes its future lies.

What a “super app” means

The term comes from Asia, where apps like WeChat and Grab bundle messaging, payments, shopping, banking, and dozens of other services into one interface — becoming a daily hub for hundreds of millions of users. A “financial super app” applies that logic to money: instead of juggling separate apps for a bank, a brokerage, a payment service, and a crypto exchange, you do everything in one place, from one account. That's the experience Teng says Binance is building — the ability to “transact, earn, pay, send, and spend” without ever leaving the platform.

Beyond crypto: what Binance is stacking in

Teng has been explicit that the ambition stretches far past digital tokens. “It's not only crypto,” he said in one interview, describing exposure across “commodities, petrochemicals, precious metals, US stocks, and pre-IPO” offerings. Several pieces of that puzzle are already live or emerging:

Tokenized stocks. In June 2026, Binance introduced “bStocks” — fully-backed tokenized versions of select U.S. equities like NVIDIA and Micron that can be traded 24/7, self-custodied, and used across DeFi apps.

Payments. Binance Pay has become a major rail in its own right, reportedly handling over $280 billion in volume and expanding into more countries — the “spend and send” backbone of the super-app pitch.

The BNB engine. BNB, once a simple fee-discount token launched in 2017, has evolved into a gateway to project launches, airdrops, and yield — the connective tissue binding the ecosystem together.

“TriFi.” Teng frames the endgame as merging traditional finance (TradFi), centralized crypto finance (CeFi), and decentralized finance (DeFi) into one continuous system — a coinage that captures the whole strategy.

The scale of the ambition

The numbers Teng invokes are staggering. Binance already serves more than 310 million registered users across 100-plus countries — and he has spoken of a vision to eventually reach 3 billion. That target reflects a belief that crypto's real prize isn't trading fees from existing enthusiasts, but becoming the default financial layer for a large share of humanity, particularly in regions underserved by traditional banks.

Why now: the macro backdrop

Teng argues the timing is driven by a genuine shift in global finance. Major banks are issuing their own stablecoins, messaging networks like SWIFT are exploring blockchain, and clearer stablecoin legislation across jurisdictions is nudging corporate treasuries toward digital assets. He points to multinationals already moving hundreds of millions in stablecoins daily to cut costs and free up capital. His pitch leans on crypto's structural advantages — 24/7 markets and near-instant “atomic settlement” that avoids the delays and risks of traditional market hours. In this telling, a super app isn't a gimmick; it's the natural front-end for a financial system being rebuilt on blockchain rails.

The elephant in the room: trust and regulation

Any honest look at this vision has to reckon with Binance's history. In 2023, the company reached a landmark settlement with U.S. authorities over anti-money-laundering and sanctions violations, its founder Changpeng Zhao stepped down, and Teng — a compliance veteran — was installed precisely to steer the company into a more regulated era. That backdrop makes the super-app ambition a double-edged sword. Offering banking-like services to billions invites exactly the kind of intense regulatory scrutiny that has dogged Binance, and success hinges on convincing regulators worldwide that it can be trusted with people's everyday money. Teng has repeatedly emphasized Binance's commitment to compliance, including pursuing MiCA licensing in Europe — a signal that the regulatory rehabilitation is central, not incidental, to the plan.

Concentration is a second concern. A single platform bundling trading, payments, custody, tokenized stocks, and lending for billions of users would wield enormous influence over the flow of money — a prospect that raises questions about systemic risk and competition, the same questions that surround the Asian super apps this model emulates.

The bottom line

Binance's super-app ambition is a clear statement that the industry's biggest players see convergence — not separation — as crypto's future, with digital assets, traditional securities, and payments folding into one seamless experience. The strategic logic is strong: Binance has the users, the products, and a token ecosystem to knit it together. But the gap between vision and reality runs directly through the two things Binance can least take for granted — regulatory trust and user confidence. Whether it becomes the WeChat of global finance or runs aground on the same compliance rocks that reshaped its leadership will be one of the defining storylines of crypto's next chapter.
