Bio
Sreeram Kannan is the Founder and CEO of Eigen Labs, the organization behind EigenLayer — the pioneering restaking protocol that enables Ethereum stakers to extend their security guarantees to additional services and applications. He is also the founder of EigenCloud, a broader vision for cloud infrastructure built on cryptoeconomic security.
Kannan is an academic researcher by training, having served as an Associate Professor at the University of Washington, Seattle, where he directed the Information Theory and Applications Lab. His research spans information theory, machine learning and decentralized systems, providing the theoretical foundations for EigenLayer's restaking and slashing mechanisms.
Launched in 2023, EigenLayer introduced the concept of "restaking" — allowing ETH stakers to opt in to securing additional Actively Validated Services (AVS) beyond the Ethereum beacon chain, earning additional rewards while subject to additional slashing risks. The protocol has grown to secure billions in restaked ETH and supports a growing ecosystem of AVS including data availability layers, oracle networks and bridge protocols.
