About Michael J. Saylor

Michael J. Saylor is an American entrepreneur, inventor, author, and philanthropist who founded the enterprise-analytics company MicroStrategy in 1989 and later led its adoption of Bitcoin as a primary corporate treasury reserve asset. He has served as Executive Chairman of Strategy Inc since August 2022, having previously served as CEO from 1989 to 2022. Under his oversight, Strategy has become the largest publicly traded corporate holder of Bitcoin. Saylor is also a vocal public advocate for Bitcoin as digital capital, frequently speaking and writing on monetary policy, inflation, and corporate treasury strategy. He remains Chairman of Strategy's board of directors.

History & Background

Saylor was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1965 to a military family and spent his childhood on U.S. Air Force bases around the world before settling near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio. He attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on a full Air Force ROTC scholarship, where he earned dual degrees in aeronautics and astronautics and science, technology and society, graduating with highest honors in 1987. While at MIT, he became fascinated by the application of computer simulation technology to public policy and business strategy, writing his thesis on system dynamics at the MIT Sloan School of Management. After graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and began a consulting career focused on computer simulations for strategic decision-making at companies such as DuPont, Dow, and Exxon.

In 1989, at the age of 24, Saylor founded MicroStrategy, built on his vision of delivering intelligence everywhere through business intelligence and analytics software. The company pioneered relational online analytical processing (ROLAP) and grew steadily, going public on NASDAQ in 1998 under the ticker MSTR. Under Saylor's long tenure as CEO, the company became a global leader in enterprise analytics and mobility software. On August 8, 2022, Saylor transitioned to the role of Executive Chairman, appointing then-President Phong Le as CEO, in order to focus more on Bitcoin acquisition strategy and advocacy. In February 2025, MicroStrategy began doing business as ‘Strategy,’ and in August 2025 the legal corporate name was changed to Strategy Inc. The Nasdaq common-stock ticker remains MSTR.

Other Founding Work

Beyond Strategy, Saylor was the creator and founder of Alarm.com (NASDAQ: ALRM), one of the first home automation and security companies, and Angel.com, a cloud-based interactive voice response provider that was sold to Genesys Telecommunications Laboratories in 2013. He is the author of The Mobile Wave: How Mobile Intelligence Will Change Everything (2012), which appeared on both The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal bestseller lists. He is a named inventor on more than 48 patents. In 1999, he established The Saylor Foundation, which runs Saylor Academy (Saylor.org), providing free college-level education to more than 2 million students worldwide.

Bitcoin Treasury Strategy

Strategy's Bitcoin treasury strategy began in 2020, when the company made its first corporate Bitcoin purchases, treating Bitcoin as a primary treasury reserve asset. The approach uses capital-market financing—including equity issuance, convertible debt, and preferred-stock structures—to systematically acquire Bitcoin. Strategy's capital-allocation framework targets Bitcoin accumulation alongside treasury-performance metrics such as BTC yield and BTC gain. Saylor, as Executive Chairman, oversees the company's long-term Bitcoin strategy. It is important to distinguish Michael Saylor personally from Strategy Inc's corporate Bitcoin holdings: the Bitcoin on Strategy's balance sheet is a corporate asset owned by the company for the benefit of its shareholders, not a personal holding of Saylor.

Current Bitcoin Holdings

As of August 10, 2026, Strategy Inc held approximately 840,447 BTC, according to the company's official Bitcoin Ledger at strategy.com/ledger. This figure changes as Strategy continues to acquire or, in some periods, sell Bitcoin. The holdings figure is a corporate treasury asset and should not be attributed to Michael Saylor personally. For the most current figure, readers should consult Strategy's official Bitcoin Ledger and SEC filings directly.

Current 2026 Work

As of August 2026, Saylor continues to serve as Executive Chairman of Strategy, focusing on Bitcoin strategy, capital allocation, and advocacy. His 2026 public commentary has explored concepts he describes as Digital Credit and Bitcoin Capitalism, discussing how Bitcoin-backed or Bitcoin-linked capital-market structures could evolve. He has spoken about corporate Bitcoin adoption, the role of credit and money in the digital age, and the broader institutional adoption of Bitcoin as a treasury asset. These ideas represent Saylor's thesis and should be understood as his views rather than universally accepted financial facts. Strategy also continues to operate its enterprise analytics, cloud, and AI-powered software business alongside its Bitcoin treasury activities.

Governance & Control

Strategy Inc is governed by a board of directors. Michael Saylor serves as Founder, Executive Chairman, and Chairman of the Board. Phong Le serves as President & CEO, managing overall corporate operations. Strategy's shareholders own the company through its listed securities on NASDAQ (MSTR and related preferred-stock tickers). The Bitcoin network itself is an independent, decentralized network that no individual or company—including Strategy or Saylor—controls or owns.

Strategy's Business Model

Strategy operates two major lines of business. The first is its Bitcoin treasury: Bitcoin acquisition and accumulation funded through capital-market financing, with treasury-performance metrics tracked publicly. The second is its enterprise software business: business intelligence, analytics, cloud, and AI-powered enterprise software serving thousands of organizations worldwide. The company's official materials continue to describe both sides of the business.

Public Commentary

Saylor is a prolific public commentator on Bitcoin and monetary economics. His stated views include: that Bitcoin is ‘digital capital’ and a superior store of value; that fiat-currency inflation erodes purchasing power over time; that corporations should hold Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset; and that digital credit and Bitcoin-backed financial structures represent the next evolution of capital markets. He frequently discusses treasury management, long-term Bitcoin economics, and institutional adoption. These are Saylor's views and thesis; they should not be treated as guaranteed outcomes or investment advice.

Why Michael Saylor Matters in Crypto

Michael Saylor is widely recognized for popularizing the publicly traded corporate Bitcoin treasury model. By converting MicroStrategy's treasury into a Bitcoin reserve beginning in 2020 and using capital-market instruments to finance ongoing accumulation, he demonstrated a template that other public companies have studied and, in some cases, adopted. His advocacy has contributed to institutional discussion of Bitcoin as a treasury asset and has influenced the broader conversation about corporate Bitcoin adoption. However, the corporate Bitcoin treasury model existed before Strategy and is followed by many companies independently; Saylor did not invent the concept, nor does he control institutional Bitcoin adoption. His influence is best understood as that of a prominent and vocal practitioner who brought significant public attention to the model.
