Bio
Leemon Baird is the inventor of the hashgraph consensus algorithm and a co-founder of Hedera, the public distributed ledger network built on hashgraph technology. He currently serves as Chief Scientist at Hashgraph, the technology development company that emerged from the restructuring of the original Hedera Hashgraph LLC in 2022.
Baird developed the hashgraph consensus mechanism as an alternative to blockchain-based ordering, using a directed acyclic graph (DAG) structure and a virtual voting protocol to achieve asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant (aBFT) consensus. He co-founded Hedera with Mance Harmon, first establishing Swirlds Inc. to hold the hashgraph patents, before launching the public Hedera network.
Hedera is governed by the Hedera Governing Council, a consortium of global enterprises that collectively manage the network rather than any single company or individual. In 2026, the hashgraph technology is being developed as open source under the Hiero project. Baird's work on post-quantum cryptography continues as a research priority. Information last checked: August 2026.
