About Guy Young
Guy Young is the Founder and CEO of Ethena Labs, the development company behind the Ethena protocol and its primary product USDe, a synthetic dollar backed through a delta-neutral hedging strategy. Young founded Ethena Labs following a career in traditional finance, during which he worked in roles involving derivatives and structured products at established financial institutions. This background directly informed Ethena's product design, which draws on derivatives-market mechanics — specifically perpetual futures funding rates — as a yield-generation and collateral-management mechanism.
Young conceived Ethena to address what he identified as a structural problem with existing stablecoin designs: fiat-backed stablecoins require traditional banking relationships and carry regulatory/counterparty risk in those systems, while overcollateralized crypto-native stablecoins are capital-inefficient. USDe is designed to be neither — it uses crypto assets as collateral while hedging their price exposure through short positions on centralized exchanges, generating a synthetic dollar that aims to remain price-stable through the delta-neutral construction rather than through direct fiat reserves or overcollateralized crypto backing.
Ethena, USDe, USDtb & Converge
Ethena Labs develops several distinct but related products: USDe is the primary synthetic dollar, designed to maintain parity with the US dollar through a delta-hedging strategy using crypto spot assets and offsetting short perpetual futures positions. The yield associated with USDe comes from funding rates paid by the short futures positions, which are positive in net when the derivatives market is in contango. Users can stake USDe as sUSDe to receive this yield. The funding rate is variable and can turn negative, which represents a material risk to the peg support mechanism.
USDtb is a separate Ethena product backed by tokenized US Treasury bills through BlackRock's BUIDL fund, representing a more conventional reserve-based stablecoin product distinct from USDe's synthetic backing model. Converge is a separate blockchain network initiative being developed by Ethena Labs in collaboration with Securitize, designed for institutional onchain finance, asset issuance, and settlement. Converge involves its own validator/governance structure and multiple institutional participants beyond Ethena Labs alone.
The ENA governance token is used for governance participation within the Ethena protocol ecosystem. Token holders do not directly guarantee USDe's peg or exchange counterparty obligations.
Key Contributions
Ethena Labs Founding
Founded Ethena Labs and led the development of USDe, introducing a delta-neutral synthetic dollar approach as an alternative to fiat-backed and overcollateralized stablecoin designs.
Delta-Neutral Stablecoin Design
Applied traditional finance derivatives concepts — specifically funding-rate arbitrage via perpetual futures — to build a crypto-native synthetic dollar that does not rely on fiat bank accounts for collateral.
USDtb Development
Led the launch of USDtb, a separate treasury-backed stablecoin product providing a conventionally reserved alternative within the Ethena product family.
Converge Network Initiative
Co-initiated the Converge network with Securitize to create institutional-grade onchain infrastructure for financial issuance and settlement, separate from Ethena's consumer DeFi products.
Institutional DeFi Bridge
Directed Ethena's positioning at the intersection of institutional capital markets and DeFi, pursuing partnerships and product development that address the needs of regulated financial entities.
Why Guy Young Matters in Crypto
USDe introduced a stablecoin design methodology based on derivatives market mechanics rather than fiat reserves or crypto overcollateralization, demonstrating that alternative structural approaches to price stability are possible onchain. The success and risks of this model — including the funding-rate risk and exchange-counterparty dependencies — have become important reference points in broader crypto debates about stablecoin design. Young's traditional finance background and application of it to DeFi product design illustrates how capital markets expertise can be translated into blockchain infrastructure. Ethena's concurrent development of USDtb and the Converge network represents an attempt to serve both retail DeFi and institutional finance from a single product family, a design challenge with significant industry implications.
