Bio
Gavin Andresen is one of Bitcoin's earliest and most consequential open-source developers. He first engaged with the Bitcoin project in 2010 and became one of the primary contributors to the Bitcoin codebase after Satoshi Nakamoto — Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator — gradually withdrew from public development. Satoshi shared repository access and project responsibilities with Andresen before disappearing, though this did not make Andresen a founder or owner of Bitcoin as a decentralized network.
He created the original Bitcoin Faucet, a website that distributed free BTC to introduce new users to the currency, and later founded the Bitcoin Foundation in 2012 to support Bitcoin's development and community. He held the title of Chief Scientist at the Bitcoin Foundation for a period. Andresen stepped back from active Bitcoin Core maintenance years ago. Today's Bitcoin Core development is distributed among many contributors without a lead maintainer. As of August 2026, his LinkedIn lists him as Founder of RiskiPedia, a risk and prediction information project started in June 2025.
