Founder & CEO of Venice.ai; Founder of ShapeShift
Erik Voorhees is a serial crypto entrepreneur whose career spans from Bitcoin's earliest days to the frontier of private AI. He is best known as the founder of ShapeShift — once the largest crypto-to-crypto exchange platform — and more recently as the Founder and CEO of Venice.ai, a platform providing access to uncensored AI models with a strong privacy architecture.
Voorhees has been a consistent and prominent voice for financial freedom, open protocols, and individual privacy in both the crypto and AI spaces. He is associated with some of the earliest Bitcoin-era projects, including SatoshiDice, and later built ShapeShift into a major crypto exchange before helping transition it toward DAO governance. In 2024, he founded Venice.ai, applying similar privacy-first principles to AI model access.
ShapeShift — Founder (Historical/DAO Transition)
ShapeShift was founded by Voorhees as a non-custodial, no-account crypto exchange — users could swap between cryptocurrencies without creating an account or providing identity documents. ShapeShift became a significant platform during the 2017–2021 crypto growth cycle. In 2021, Voorhees announced a major strategic shift: ShapeShift decentralized its operations, dissolved its corporate structure, airdropped FOX governance tokens to users and employees, and transitioned to a DAO governed by token holders. Voorhees is no longer the centralized executive of ShapeShift; the ShapeShift DAO community and FOX token holders govern the protocol today.
Venice.ai — Current Project
Venice.ai, founded in 2024, is a platform providing access to open-source AI models (including large language models and image models) with a privacy-first architecture: Venice claims it does not retain user prompts, does not train on user data, and processes requests without logging personally identifiable information. The platform targets users who value privacy and want access to uncensored AI model outputs that may differ from heavily filtered commercial AI services.
Venice has a native ecosystem token (VVV) associated with the platform. Current VVV utility, governance scope, and platform economics should be verified from official Venice.ai documentation.
Regulation & Legal History
Voorhees and ShapeShift settled with the SEC in 2014 over allegations related to SatoshiDice and unregistered securities; Voorhees agreed to a civil penalty and disgorgement without admitting or denying wrongdoing. This historical matter is publicly documented and is the only material regulatory event in his public record.
Current 2026 Work
As of August 2026, Voorhees serves as Founder & CEO of Venice.ai, continuing to develop private AI infrastructure and expand the platform's model catalog and API capabilities. His relationship with ShapeShift is as a community participant and advocate, not as a corporate executive.

- Venice.ai: Founded Venice.ai to provide privacy-respecting AI model access as an alternative to surveillance-heavy commercial AI services.
- Financial Freedom Advocacy: Maintained a consistent and influential public voice for open financial systems and individual sovereignty throughout his career.
