Founder & Chief Scientist of DFINITY
Dominic Williams is the Founder and Chief Scientist of DFINITY, the Swiss non-profit foundation that developed the Internet Computer blockchain. Williams founded DFINITY in 2016 with the vision of extending the public internet with a decentralized cloud compute layer — a blockchain that could host software, smart contracts, and user data with Web-speed performance, without relying on traditional cloud infrastructure like AWS or Azure.
The Internet Computer launched its Genesis event in May 2021 after years of research and development, introducing novel cryptographic and networking technologies including chain-key cryptography, subnet architecture, and the Network Nervous System (NNS) — a decentralized algorithmic governance DAO that controls the network's evolution.
DFINITY & Internet Computer
DFINITY is a Swiss-based foundation that led the research and development of the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP). The Internet Computer is a Layer-1 blockchain that uses a "canister" smart contract model — where software and its state run directly on the blockchain — and a reverse-gas model in which smart contract developers pay for computation, not end users. This design aims to make user-facing dApps feel as responsive as traditional web applications.
Chain-Key Cryptography: A suite of advanced cryptographic protocols unique to the Internet Computer that enable threshold signatures, subnet-to-subnet communication, and the ability for the network to sign Bitcoin and Ethereum transactions natively — allowing ICP smart contracts to hold and spend BTC and ETH without bridges.
Network Nervous System (NNS): The ICP governance DAO where ICP token holders lock tokens as "neurons" to vote on network upgrades, add/remove subnets, and set economic parameters. The NNS governs the Internet Computer's evolution and can modify the blockchain's own software.
Onchain AI: DFINITY has pursued making the Internet Computer a platform for running AI models entirely on-chain. Williams has argued for a "self-writing internet" in which AI models deployed as canisters can autonomously update and extend themselves — a long-term technical and philosophical goal whose current production status should be verified from official DFINITY sources.

His focus includes advancing chain-key technology for cross-chain interoperability with Bitcoin and Ethereum, promoting onchain AI capabilities on the Internet Computer, and ICP governance through the NNS. DFINITY as a foundation does not control the Internet Computer network directly; the NNS and node operators govern the protocol.
