Bio
Blockchain Protocol Designer; Creator of BitShares, Steem and EOSIO
Dan Larimer is one of the most prolific blockchain protocol designers in the industry, credited with creating or co-creating three major platforms: BitShares, Steem, and the EOSIO software stack. He is closely associated with Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) consensus and the Graphene high-performance blockchain framework. Larimer departed from Block.one — the company he helped build as CTO — at the end of 2020, announcing his departure publicly in January 2021.
In the years following his Block.one exit, Larimer has focused on independent research and writing, exploring themes of decentralized governance, censorship resistance, decentralized identity, and new social system architectures. He launched the Clarion/Fractally project after Block.one, though readers should verify current operational status before treating it as an active production system.
Founding Story & Co-Founder Attribution
Larimer co-founded BitShares — a decentralized exchange and stablecoin platform — which introduced the concept of delegated proof of stake (DPoS). He subsequently co-created Steem, a blockchain-based content and social platform, alongside Ned Scott. He then served as CTO at Block.one, the company that built the EOSIO open-source software underlying the EOS network; EOSIO development involved significant contributions from multiple engineers and researchers. Larimer left Block.one at the end of 2020.
Key Projects Explained
BitShares introduced decentralized exchange functionality and bitAssets (crypto-collateralized stablecoins pegged to external assets), running on DPoS consensus with elected block producers. Steem used a similar DPoS architecture to reward content creators and curators with token distributions. EOSIO was designed as a high-throughput smart-contract platform with a delegated governance structure; the EOS network that runs on this software is today governed by its own community and the Antelope coalition — not by Larimer or Block.one.
Current 2026 Work
As of August 2026, Dan Larimer does not hold a formal executive role at a publicly announced company. He continues to write and publish research on blockchain governance, censorship-resistant systems, and decentralized social infrastructure through his personal channels. His Clarion and Fractally projects proposed new frameworks for community governance and value distribution; prospective users should check current official channels for operational status.
Key Contributions
- Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS): Introduced and implemented DPoS consensus through BitShares, enabling faster finality via elected delegate/witness governance.
- Graphene Framework: Co-developed the Graphene C++ blockchain toolkit powering BitShares, Steem, and later EOSIO-family chains.
- BitShares Decentralized Exchange: Launched one of the first functional decentralized exchange platforms with on-chain order books and collateralized pegged assets.
- Steem Content Incentives: Built a novel tokenized content reward system at scale on Steem.
- EOSIO Architecture: As Block.one CTO, drove the design of EOSIO's resource model, parallel execution, and account-based smart contract system.
- Governance Research: Post-Block.one, contributed public research on decentralized identity, fractal governance, and censorship-resistant communication.
Career Timeline
Designed and launched BitShares — introducing DPoS consensus and decentralized exchange with collateralized stablecoins.
Co-founded Steem with Ned Scott — blockchain-based social/content platform rewarding contributors with token distributions.
Served as CTO at Block.one; led development of EOSIO, one of the most capitalized blockchain fundraises of its era.
Departed Block.one; announced publicly in January 2021.
Launched Clarion and later Fractally — decentralized governance and community-coordination frameworks.
Continues independent research and writing on governance, censorship resistance, and decentralized social systems.
Governance Note
The EOS network that runs on EOSIO software is governed today by its block producers, the EOS Network Foundation, and the broader Antelope coalition of chains. Larimer has no formal operational control over EOS governance as of August 2026.
