What is the Gluon Card?
Gluon Card is a Visa card from the Gluon app, and it is not a prepaid crypto debit card. It is a collateralised credit card: you link a wallet holding crypto, Gluon sets a spending limit based on the value of that collateral, and the card is issued with a 0% APR on purchases. You spend against a credit line secured by your own crypto rather than against a balance you park with a company.
The app behind it is more than a card. Gluon is a self-custody wallet built around social payments — sending value inside Telegram, WhatsApp and iMessage without the recipient needing an account — with three product layers: Gluon Balance for near-instant transfers, Gluon Grow for yield from Bitcoin and Ethereum money markets, and Gluon Card for spending. The operator is GL Worldwide Limited, and the card programme is issued by Third National under licence from Visa, with two separate rulebooks: one for US cardholders, one international.
How the collateral model works
This is the part to understand before applying, because it changes how risk sits. Your primary linked wallet, or additional wallets you nominate, provide the collateral that secures your card charges. The terms state plainly that neither Gluon nor the issuer holds custody of that collateral and that the issuer is not a custodian or owner of it — the crypto stays in a wallet you control and remains verifiable there, while being encumbered against your card spending.
The consequences run both ways. Because the collateral stays in your wallet, you keep control and can hold crypto until you actually spend. But if the market value of that collateral falls below what you owe, the agreement anticipates a liquidation event: collateral is liquidated to satisfy charges, unencumbered balances stay accessible, and if the market value was already below the amount owed you still owe the difference. The international terms also carry a liquidation penalty of up to $35. In other words, this is a leveraged-adjacent product: a sharp drop in your collateral is not just a portfolio drawdown, it can trigger a sale and a fee.
What the card costs
Gluon is more transparent than most programmes in this directory: the fees are published in the card terms rather than left to a sales call. There are no monthly charges, the virtual card is issued at no cost, and the US disclosures show a $0 annual fee with 0.00% APR on purchases — with the honest caveat, written into the terms, that the issuer and Gluon reserve the right to introduce interest in future on new purchases.
Where you pay is spending abroad and behaving badly. International spend costs 1.5% foreign exchange in both rulebooks, plus a $0.30 cross-border fee in the international terms. US cash advances cost $1 + 0.65%. Late payment is charged at 2% of the outstanding balance under US terms and up to $40 internationally, with returned payments up to $29 and the liquidation penalty up to $35. The international terms additionally list card issuance, replacement, usage, service and failed-payment fees as possible charges without publishing amounts, so the physical card and after-sales costs are the ones to confirm before ordering.
Using the card
Setup is in-app: download Gluon, verify identity with a government ID and a selfie, then activate the card from the Spend section. You must be 18 or older and live somewhere the card is supported; verification normally completes in minutes, and up to 72 hours when extra checks are required. Virtual cards are immediate and work with Google Pay and Apple Pay, and a physical card takes about two to three weeks to arrive. No bank account is required at any point.
Spending is straightforward once funded: pay anywhere Visa is accepted, online or in store, and the merchant is settled in their local currency. Cash advances are supported at ATMs and PIN point-of-sale devices where enabled, which is worth testing early if ATM access matters to you. The US disclosures cap your liability for unauthorised use at $50, while expressly excluding ATM cash advances from that protection — a detail that matters more here than on a card funded by a settled balance.
Limits, verification and control
Limits are dynamic rather than advertised. Your spending limit is set by Gluon according to the amount of collateral in your linked wallet, with the US disclosures noting that different credit limits may apply to different balance categories, such as cash advances and special offers. Daily and monthly load and spend caps and a maximum account balance also exist according to the FAQ, but no figures are published, so the practical ceiling is whatever your collateral supports at the time.
The compliance framework follows the issuer’s programme: identity verification at onboarding, a published prohibitions list, and card terms that allow the issuer to restrict or close an account. Card privileges can be terminated for misuse, and attempts to use a terminated card may see it retained by a merchant, ATM or financial institution.
Who it suits
Gluon Card fits a specific profile: someone who already holds crypto, wants to spend without selling it outright, values keeping the collateral in their own wallet, and is comfortable managing a credit line secured by a volatile asset. It is also unusually social — if the appeal of sending money inside a chat app is real to you, the card is the spending half of that product rather than a standalone financial tool. It suits less well anyone who wants a prepaid card with no debt mechanics, no liquidation exposure, published hard limits, cashback, or a long operating track record: the app launched in November 2025, its public review base is small, and the terms themselves reserve the right to add interest, adjust fee types and change card terms.
If you are comparing collateral-based cards, the ether.fi Cash card runs a similar model with the same named issuer, and the crypto cards directory covers the prepaid alternatives. For the yield side of the same app, the crypto lending platforms directory is the relevant comparison set for Gluon Grow’s Bitcoin and Ethereum money markets.
