What is Ethena Pay Card?
Ethena Pay Card is the virtual Visa from Ethena, the team behind USDe, the synthetic dollar that grew into one of the largest stablecoins in the market. The card spends directly from the balance held in the Ethena Pay app, so there is no top-up step and no separate card balance to fund: the dollars you are earning on are the dollars you are spending.
It launched at the start of September 2026 as part of a wider push into what Ethena calls an “internet money neobank” — a multi-currency fiat account, a self-custodial stablecoin wallet and payments in one app. The card is issued by a third-party issuer under licence from the card network, and Ethena Pay Ltd., the Malta-based company behind the app, operates the software and rewards around it.
How the card works
A virtual card is generated in under a minute and can be added to Apple Pay straight away, with Google Pay on the roadmap. It works online and in person wherever Visa is accepted, and every purchase draws on your Ethena Pay balance rather than a credit line — the card carries a 0.00% APR on purchases, and cash advances and balance transfers are not available at all.
Spending in U.S. dollars costs nothing. Transactions in another currency are converted by the card network for a fee of roughly 1%, which Ethena Pay passes through at cost and adds nothing to — an unusually clean arrangement, since most cards bury a markup in that number.
You hold the money, not Ethena
The card sits on a self-custodial wallet: private keys and recovery phrases live on your device, Ethena Pay states it does not hold, manage or have access to your funds, and there is no way for anyone to recover them if you lose them. Sign-in uses Apple or Google social login plus passkeys and biometrics rather than a password, and you can withdraw to an external wallet or a bank account at any time with nothing locked and no term to wait out. Your fiat IBAN is provided through licensed banking partners, and Ethena Pay is explicit that it is not itself a bank, broker-dealer, investment adviser or money services business.
Cashback: up to 5%, paid in AVAX
Qualifying card transactions earn cashback credited in AVAX, the native asset of Avalanche, which is also the network the product settles on. The rate is banded like tax brackets rather than being a flat headline: each band applies only to the portion of your monthly spend that falls inside it, so crossing into a lower band re-prices further spending only and never touches cashback you have already earned.
The Standard tier opens at 4% on the first $2,500 of monthly spend, dropping to 1% between $2,500 and $4,000 and to nothing above $4,000. Pro opens at 4.5% up to $8,000, and the VIP tier pays 5% on the first $20,000. Only settled transactions earn, so cashback lands a few days after a purchase rather than instantly, and it is paid out once a day. Purchases of crypto, stablecoins, NFTs or securities, gambling, gift cards, ATM withdrawals, peer-to-peer transfers and account funding are all excluded, as are transactions of $1.00 or less. Because the payout is converted to AVAX at the moment of credit, the dollar value you ultimately keep moves with the AVAX price after it arrives.
The balance earns while it waits
The other half of the pitch is the balance itself. Ethena Pay targets up to 6% per annum paid daily on eligible balances, made up of the prevailing USDe base rate plus a Daily Boost that Ethena adds to bring you up to your tier’s total. Standard pays 5% on balances up to $5,000, Pro 6% up to $100,000 and VIP 6% up to $1,000,000; anything above the cap still earns the base USDe rate. The Boost is credited in USDe, requires at least one qualifying card transaction a month, and Ethena describes it as a discretionary promotional incentive rather than interest or yield — it is not insured by any deposit-insurance scheme. For the wider market of products that pay for dollar deposits, the crypto lending platforms directory is the place to compare.
Fees
Ethena Pay publishes a complete schedule, which is rare in this category. Opening, maintaining and closing an account are free with no minimum balance and no inactivity fee; virtual card issuance, activation and replacement are free; there is no cross-border fee and no fee on dollar purchases. The only routine costs are the network’s roughly 1% conversion on non-dollar spending, ATM withdrawals at $1.00 plus 0.65% where they are available, and penalty fees of up to $40 for a late payment and $29 for a returned payment. Pro access comes through a subscription or referrals, with the price shown at enrolment.
Where it works
Ethena Pay is live in 48 countries across Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia & the Middle East, Africa and Oceania, with more markets to follow. It is not offered to U.S. persons, and it stays out of the restricted jurisdictions listed in its terms. You must be 18 or older, and eligibility for individual features can carry extra rules on top of country availability.
Who it suits
This is one of the strongest reward structures in the directory for anyone outside the United States who already holds dollars on-chain: 4–5% back on everyday spending, a zero-markup FX policy, no account fees and a balance that pays daily. It suits users who are comfortable holding their own keys, who spend in dollars or accept the network’s conversion cost, and who want cashback in crypto rather than points. It suits less well anyone in the U.S., anyone who wants a physical card to withdraw cash from an ATM, and anyone uncomfortable with rewards paid in a volatile asset or with a headline rate that fades as monthly spend climbs. For the wider field, start with the crypto cards directory; the closest analogue is the ether.fi Cash Card, which runs a similar DeFi-native model of spending against a yield-bearing balance with crypto cashback.
