Zcash at a Glance
Numbers as of 26 September 2026. ZEC has been moving 5–20% in a day recently, so check live prices before you do anything.
So, What Is Zcash?
The simplest way I can put it: Zcash is Bitcoin with a privacy switch.
It has the same 21 million coin limit as Bitcoin, the same halvings every four years, and it's mined the same way. But Zcash gives you two kinds of addresses:
- Transparent addresses work just like Bitcoin. Anyone can see who sent what to whom.
- Shielded addresses hide the sender, the receiver and the amount. The network can still confirm the transaction is valid, but nobody else can see the details.
The magic behind this is something called zero-knowledge proofs, or zk-SNARKs. The idea is that you can prove something is true without revealing the information itself. Zcash was the first real-world use of this technology, built by cryptographers from Johns Hopkins, MIT and other top universities. Today, that same technology powers a huge part of the Ethereum ecosystem. Zcash got there first.
I also like that Zcash is flexible. You can choose to share a "viewing key" with an auditor, a tax authority or an exchange, so they can see your transactions if needed. That's a big difference from coins where everything is always hidden, and it matters a lot for regulation, as we'll see.
Who's Behind It?
Zcash was started by Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn, a well-known cypherpunk and security researcher. Development has mostly been done by two groups: the Electric Coin Company (ECC) and the Zcash Foundation.
Instead of a VC or a big token sale, Zcash funds its development through the block rewards. About 20% of newly mined ZEC goes to development grants and a reserve, while miners get the other 80%. Some people call this a "tax"; others say it's why the project has survived ten years.
From Forgotten to Top 10: The Story
2016: A wild launch. When Zcash launched in October 2016, there were almost no coins available, and the price briefly shot to over $3,000. That's the all-time high it still hasn't beaten. Then it spent years sliding lower.
2018 to 2024: The dark years. Regulators started worrying about privacy coins. Japanese exchanges delisted Zcash in 2018, and over the years more exchanges followed in different countries. By early 2024, ZEC was trading around $20. It felt finished.
November 2024: The halving. Block rewards were cut in half, which roughly halved the rate of new ZEC coming into the market.
Late 2025: The comeback begins. Privacy suddenly became a big theme in crypto again. ZEC ran to around $750 in November 2025. The Winklevoss twins put $50 million into a company focused on Zcash.
January 2026: Drama and relief. On 8 January, the entire Electric Coin Company team quit after a governance fight with the nonprofit board that oversaw them, and set up a new company. ZEC dropped about 14% in a day. But a week later, on 15 January, the US SEC closed its nearly two-year investigation into the Zcash Foundation with no action. A big weight came off.
May 2026: Big money shows up. Multicoin Capital revealed a large ZEC position, and short sellers got squeezed hard as the price jumped 30% in a day. Foundry, one of the biggest mining pools, launched a Zcash pool.
August to September 2026: ETF mania. Grayscale turned its old Zcash trust into a US ETF on 25 August, when ZEC was around $770. Since then, the price has roughly doubled. ZEC broke $1,249 on 6 September, then went above $1,650. 21Shares launched a Zcash product in Europe on 21 September, and Grayscale's ETF just crossed $1 billion.
Why Is Everyone Suddenly Buying Zcash?
From everything I read, it comes down to four things.
1. People are actually using the privacy. This is the one that impressed me most. In early 2024, only about 8% of all ZEC sat in shielded (private) addresses. Today it's around 30%, roughly 5 million ZEC. Weekly shielded transactions recently hit their highest level since 2022. This isn't just price speculation. Real usage is growing.
2. Privacy is back in fashion. As more of life goes on-chain, and as governments and companies track more of what we do, a lot of people are realising that a fully public blockchain isn't always a good thing. Zcash is the most "regulator-friendly" way to get privacy, thanks to its optional design.
3. The regulatory cloud lifted in the US. With the SEC closing its investigation and Grayscale's ETF approved, big investors now have an easy, legal way to buy ZEC.
4. Scarcity. ZEC has a hard cap of 21 million, and after the 2024 halving, new supply is small. When big buyers show up, there just isn't much ZEC to go around.
What's Coming Next
Zcash has a big network upgrade, called NU7, planned for around 5 November 2026. The headline change: blocks will come every 25 seconds instead of every 75, making transactions roughly three times faster. There are test phases in October, so the date could still move.
The developers are also moving the network to newer, Rust-based software, and they've released a new cryptography library that makes private transactions much faster on phones. Further out, there's a plan to make Zcash resistant to future quantum computers over the next 12 to 18 months.
The Risks I'd Take Seriously
- It has run very far, very fast. ZEC doubled in the last month and is up about 26x in a year. Historically, ZEC has had huge rallies followed by 50%+ crashes.
- A lot of the buying is leveraged. Some exchanges offer up to 150x leverage on ZEC. That creates violent squeezes in both directions. Tens of millions of dollars in shorts have been wiped out in single days, and longs can be wiped out just as fast.
- The ETF number is less impressive than it sounds. Grayscale's ETF is worth $1 billion, but only about $306 million of that is new money. Most of the rest is simply the ZEC price going up.
- Europe is tightening. From July 2027, new EU anti-money laundering rules ban regulated exchanges from handling anonymity-enhancing coins. Because Zcash has transparent addresses, some exchanges may keep listing it with transparent-only deposits and withdrawals. But others may drop it, which could hurt liquidity in Europe.
- Governance drama. The whole ECC team leaving in January shows that the people behind Zcash don't always agree. The protocol kept running fine, but it's worth watching who is building and how they're funded.
- Other risks you don't control. Bitget, one of the exchanges that lists ZEC, reported a major hack on 25 September. User balances are covered, but it's a reminder not to leave large amounts on any exchange.
The Good and the Bad
What I like
- Real, proven privacy tech that's been running for 10 years.
- Shielded usage has grown from 8% to about 30% of supply.
- Same 21 million cap and halvings as Bitcoin.
- SEC probe closed; US and European ETFs now live.
- Optional privacy makes it easier for regulators to accept.
What worries me
- Up 26x in a year and doubled in a month. Big crashes have followed past rallies.
- Heavy leverage makes the price extremely jumpy.
- EU rules from 2027 could push some exchanges to drop it.
- Most of the ETF's $1B is price gains, not new money.
- Core dev team left ECC in January after a governance fight.
Thinking of Buying? Here's What I'd Do First
- Don't chase the green candles. After a 100% month, buying in smaller parts over time is usually smarter than going all in.
- Avoid leverage. ZEC is swinging 10–20% in a day. With leverage, that can wipe you out fast.
- Check your exchange's rules. Some exchanges only support transparent ZEC deposits and withdrawals. Know before you send.
- Try the privacy yourself. If you believe in the privacy story, use a shielded wallet and see how it works. It helps you understand what you own.
- Only invest what you can afford to lose. Even top 10 coins can drop 50% or more.
My Honest Take
I have a lot of respect for Zcash. It's one of the few projects in crypto that invented something genuinely new, and it took almost ten years for the market to care. The fact that people are now actually using the privacy features, not just buying the coin, tells me this comeback has real substance behind it.
But I'd be lying if I said the price action looks calm. A coin that doubles in a month, with heavy leverage and ETF excitement, can easily give back a big chunk of those gains in a few bad weeks. And Europe's 2027 rules are a real question mark.
If you believe privacy will matter more in the future, ZEC is one of the strongest ways to bet on that idea. Just don't buy it because it's going up. Buy it because you understand why it matters, and be ready for a bumpy ride.
