Where Fartcoin Came From (Yes, an AI)
To understand Fartcoin, you have to meet Truth Terminal.
Truth Terminal is an AI chatbot created by a researcher named Andy Ayrey. It posts on X, says strange things, and became a crypto celebrity in 2024 after it helped make another meme coin, GOAT, famous. Crypto people even sent it money and tokens, and it reportedly became a millionaire.
In one of its conversations, Truth Terminal came up with the idea of "Fartcoin," a coin where every transaction would make a little fart sound. It was a joke about "gas fees," the cost of making a transaction on a blockchain.
Someone took the joke literally. On 18 October 2024, an anonymous person launched Fartcoin on pump.fun. Here's my favourite detail: the original creator reportedly sold their share of the tokens for about $500. That stake would later have been worth millions.
To be clear, Fartcoin doesn't actually make fart sounds, and it has no special features. It's a plain Solana meme token. The joke is the whole product.
The Rise, the Fall and the Comeback
- Late 2024: The takeoff. Fartcoin started at a fraction of a cent. Thanks to Truth Terminal's fame and the post-election crypto rally, it passed a $800 million market cap by December, with more than 47,000 holders.
- 19 January 2025: The peak. The day after the TRUMP meme coin launched, meme coin mania hit its high point. Fartcoin reached about $2.50, a market cap of roughly $2.5 billion. That's nearly 1,000x from where it started three months earlier.
- 2025: Big listings, big swings. Fartcoin got listed on major exchanges like Coinbase and Kraken, and futures trading was added on Binance. It had a strong comeback in the spring of 2025, but like most meme coins, it lost most of its value as the year went on.
- August 2026: A new rally. After a long slide, Fartcoin went up about 80% in the first three weeks of August.
- September 2026: Momentum returns. As the whole meme coin market rebounded and Bitcoin climbed above $85,000, Fartcoin jumped 19% in one day on 22 September and more than 44% in a week. It's now sitting around $0.20.
What's Behind the Recent Rally?
I looked at the data behind the latest move, and there are a few things worth knowing.
- Leverage is heating up. Futures trading on Fartcoin jumped sharply, with a lot of new leveraged "long" bets. Traders bought over 40 million FARTCOIN on Binance Futures around 22 September alone. That can push prices up fast, but it can also cause sudden crashes when those bets get liquidated.
- Some exchanges are moving tokens around. One exchange moved tokens into cold storage, while another moved tokens to its hot wallet for trading. Market maker Wintermute also added about 1.7 million FARTCOIN for liquidity. These are signs of activity, but not clear signs of long-term buying.
- The whole meme market is up. Fartcoin is rising with the tide. Dog coins, cat coins and frog coins have all bounced this month.
So the rally looks real, but I'd call it more "meme season plus leverage" than a new Fartcoin-specific story.
Watch Out for the Copycats
Success always attracts imitators. There's Fartboy, "Shartcoin" (which literally calls itself "The Next Fartcoin"), and many smaller fart-themed tokens. None of them are Fartcoin. The real one's contract ends in "…bgpump," and it's listed on major exchanges, so there's no reason to take a chance on a lookalike.
The Risks I'd Take Seriously
- Down about 92% from its peak. Plenty of 2025 buyers are still sitting on big losses and may sell into any rally.
- No product at all. It's a joke from an AI. There's nothing behind it except attention.
- Leverage. Heavy futures trading makes big drops more likely, especially after quick rallies.
- Anonymous and team-less. The creator is long gone. The community runs it.
- Meme market dependence. When meme season cools, Fartcoin tends to fall hard with it.
The Good and the Bad
What I like
- One of the most famous meme coins of this cycle.
- Listed on Coinbase, Kraken and other major exchanges.
- A truly unique origin story involving an AI.
- Deep liquidity, about $35M traded daily.
- Survived nearly two years and just bounced strongly.
What worries me
- Down about 92% from its all-time high.
- No product, no roadmap, no team.
- Recent rally driven heavily by leverage.
- Many copycats with similar names.
- Moves mostly with the wider meme market.
Thinking of Buying? Here's What I'd Do First
- Buy on a major exchange. Coinbase, Kraken and others list it, so there's no need to risk a fake token.
- Don't chase a 44% week. Buying in parts after a pullback is usually smarter.
- Stay away from leverage. Fartcoin's futures market is running hot, and liquidations can be brutal.
- Think in market cap. Getting back to $2.50 means a market cap of about $2.5 billion again. Ask yourself if that's realistic.
- Only invest what you can afford to lose. It's already dropped over 90% once.
My Honest Take
I have to respect the story. An AI makes a fart joke, a stranger turns it into a coin and sells out for $500, and a few months later it's worth $2.5 billion and listed on Coinbase. You couldn't make it up, and that's exactly why it worked.
But Fartcoin is still what it always was: a joke with a ticker. It's down over 90% from its peak, and the latest rally leans heavily on leveraged traders and a wider meme bounce.
If you want exposure to a well-known, liquid Solana meme coin, Fartcoin is one of the more established options. Just go in knowing it's pure sentiment, keep it small, and don't expect a return to 2025 prices without another full-blown meme mania.
