The XRPL Commons Aquarium has selected 13 startups from 11 countries for its ninth cohort, announced on October 13. This is the programme’s first fully online edition, bringing together teams working on payments, AI-driven finance, real-world assets and credit applications.
The development expands the pipeline of businesses building on the XRP Ledger. Its significance will ultimately depend on what those teams deliver: functioning products, repeat usage and sustainable commercial activity.
XRPL Commons Aquarium: who joined Cohort 9?
The selected teams span five areas:
Area | Selected startups |
Payments and stablecoin commerce | XRPay, Payinnov Labs, Salypay, Netten, Zeno |
Agentic finance | Ultra AI, AgntPymt |
Real-world assets and climate finance | Megawatt, HestiaX |
DeFi and credit | Straid, Laguna |
Inheritance and trade-finance infrastructure | GenWealth, Paper-Chain, associated with Vynex Tech |
Names and grouping are based on the official cohort announcement.
The breadth is notable. It places merchant payments alongside automated financial activity, energy-related assets and services addressing documentation or succession.
These businesses face different adoption tests. A payment product needs reliable settlement and merchant acceptance. A financing product must also establish underwriting, servicing and appropriate safeguards.
What the programme provides—and what it does not
Aquarium will introduce founders to investors through an online Demo Day midway through the programme. Four participants—Straid, XRPay, Paper-Chain and Netten—entered after completing XRPL Commons’ Make Waves builder challenge.
The transition gives those teams a further route to technical and commercial support.
However, an introduction to investors is not a completed investment. Likewise, grant eligibility does not disclose an approved amount, payment schedule or commitment to every participant.
No investment total for the cohort was established in the reviewed announcement.
Payments need customers as well as infrastructure
The payment teams provide a practical lens for assessing the cohort’s progress. Useful measures would include active merchants, successful transactions, repeat customers and the cost of completing payments.
Bitnxt’s interpretation: Technical capability matters, but businesses also need reconciliation tools, dependable support and a settlement process that fits their existing operations.
A merchant’s decision is rarely based on blockchain branding alone. It depends on whether the service solves a payment problem at an acceptable cost.
Bitnxt’s guide to choosing a crypto payment gateway examines those operational considerations.
AI finance puts authorization alongside automation
Ultra AI and AgntPymt represent different parts of the agentic-finance theme: discovering and transacting on opportunities, and governing what agents are permitted to do.
That distinction deserves attention. Enabling software to initiate a payment is one challenge; defining its permissions, limits and accountability is another.
Bitnxt’s analytical assessment: Meaningful adoption would involve transactions tied to useful services, with clear authorization and auditability. Transaction counts alone would not establish revenue, independent users or sustainable demand.

Credit products require a separate risk assessment
Straid is described as a collateralized lending platform enabling RLUSD borrowing against XRP holdings.
Borrowing against an asset differs from selling it. It also introduces obligations that need to be understood through the product’s actual terms.
For any lending application, the relevant questions include collateral valuation, liquidation rules, repayment conditions and access to funds during stress. Cohort membership does not answer those questions or replace a product-specific assessment.

What this means for XRP holders
An expanding developer pipeline is an ecosystem development, rather than direct evidence of additional XRP buying.
The eventual relationship depends on how products operate: which assets they use, what balances users retain and whether activity persists beyond initial trials.
Security arrangements also deserve scrutiny as applications gain financial permissions. Bitnxt’s crypto wallet directory provides background on custody models; readers should separately verify each application’s supported wallets and authorization requirements.
Bitnxt view: selection begins the commercial test
Bitnxt’s editorial assessment: The cohort offers a useful picture of where XRPL founders see opportunities. The next test is execution.
Evidence worth following includes product availability, retained customers, payment reliability, financing performance and disclosed grant milestones. Those measures will explain more than the number of selected startups.
The online format broadens access to the programme. Whether it translates into stronger businesses will become clearer through the products and customer outcomes that follow.
