Vitalik Buterin is coding again — and this time the target is one of the internet's oldest dilemmas: how to let people post anonymously without letting trolls run wild. The Ethereum co-founder has released what he describes as a toy demo of an anonymous bulletin board with content moderation, built on Aztec, the privacy-focused Ethereum layer-2 network. The proof-of-concept code has been open-sourced for anyone to inspect and build on.

The Problem the Demo Attacks

Anonymous forums traditionally face a brutal trade-off. Full anonymity means banned users simply return under new identities, making moderation toothless; effective moderation usually means tracking identities, destroying the anonymity. Buterin's demo shows a cryptographic third path.

The approach draws directly on ideas Buterin laid out in an exchange with cryptographer Ian Miers last year, where he argued that content moderation doesn't require heavyweight tools like fully homomorphic encryption or multi-party computation. Because posted content is plaintext anyway, he reasoned, zero-knowledge proofs are enough: a user can prove they hold a valid, non-banned posting credential without revealing who they are. Moderators can then ban the credential behind abusive posts — silencing the bad actor — while never learning the identity of anyone, rule-breaker or not.

Why Aztec Is the Natural Home

The choice of platform is no accident. Aztec is the programmable-privacy layer-2 that lets developers build applications with confidentiality baked in at the contract level using zero-knowledge proofs, via its Noir programming language. Buterin's ties to the project run deep: he was participant number one in Aztec's Ignition trusted setup ceremony back in 2020 and later invested in the network, which has raised more than $170 million from backers including Paradigm and a16z before launching its token.

Alongside the demo, Buterin noted that the project has reached Stage 2 — the most decentralized tier in the rollup maturity framework he himself championed, in which a network runs without training wheels and users are protected even if its operators turn malicious. For a privacy chain aspiring to host censorship-resistant applications, that milestone matters as much as the app itself.

A Small Demo With a Big Thesis Behind It

The bulletin board also slots neatly into Buterin's evolving vision for Ethereum. In recent months he has argued the network's most fundamental role may be less 'world computer' and more globally shared public bulletin board — a censorship-resistant, verifiable data layer for applications like secure voting, credential management, and anonymous-but-accountable communication. A working demo of exactly such an application, built by Ethereum's most famous voice on a privacy rollup that settles to Ethereum, is the thesis made tangible.

It's a toy, as its author freely admits — but toys from Buterin have a habit of becoming templates. Developers can now fork the open-source code and test whether anonymous-yet-moderated social platforms are ready to graduate from proof-of-concept to product.
