A Charles Schwab money market fund disclosed $11.39 million in XRP ETF shares sitting in its repo collateral pool, and that quiet line item is a bigger institutional milestone than a hundred inflow headlines. The Sept. 8 Form N-MFP3 filing, covering Aug. 31 portfolio data, shows eight collateral line items of spot XRP ETFs issued by Bitwise, Canary Capital, Franklin Templeton, and Grayscale, pledged by JPMorgan Securities desks against roughly $7.20 million of loans and Bank of America desks against roughly $4.19 million. The mechanics matter: Schwab's Prime Advantage Money Fund lent cash to Wall Street prime brokers and took their XRP ETF shares as collateral. Schwab is not investing in XRP. Wall Street's biggest banks are using XRP funds as margin.
Repo is the plumbing of dollar funding, the market where prime brokers finance inventories overnight and money market funds park their trillions. Collateral eligibility is not a sentiment, it is a credit judgment: a desk accepts your asset only if it trusts the price, the liquidity, and the legal claim. JPMorgan and Bank of America putting spot XRP ETFs into that stack means the operational question, can a crypto fund settle as smoothly as an equity fund, has quietly been answered at the level that matters. Earlier market estimates caught only $4.8 million of the exposure by missing five secondary entries; the true aggregate is $11,388,542, including $701,981.70 in Franklin Ripple ETF shares, about $1.01 million in Grayscale shares, and $3.07 million in Canary's fund.
"Make that three. Franklin ripple native ETF is also in the Schwab filing, $701,981.70 in collateral value. Grayscale + Canary + Franklin, all in one fund." — BankXRP, on X
What a Repo Line Actually Proves
Caveats before the victory lap, because they are real. N-MFP3 collateral line items are not directional bets; they reflect what counterparties posted, not what Schwab chose. Volatility in XRP itself can force those same desks to post more margin or swap out the collateral overnight, which is why haircuts on volatile assets stay punitive. And rehypothecation, the same share blocks pledged through multiple dealers, could mean double-counting that a filing cannot fully reveal. But even fully discounted, the signal stands: the collateral tier that once meant Treasuries, agencies, and blue-chip equities now includes a spot XRP fund, alongside the Bitcoin ETF complex that crossed Wall Street's threshold first and the altcoin fund category gathering assets at pace. It also lands the same week Schwab itself made crypto-adjacent news on the advisory side of its business, a reminder that the plumbing and the salesforce are converging on the same conclusion.
The irony is that the flows themselves are modest: the five U.S. spot XRP ETFs recorded about $1.98 million in net inflows on Tuesday. Institutional acceptance is arriving through back-office filings before it shows up in flow data, which is usually how real adoption looks. Nobody announces it. It just appears in the paperwork.
Watch the next N-MFP filing cycle for two things: whether the XRP collateral line grows, and whether other money market complexes start showing crypto ETF line items of their own. The first one proved eligibility. The second will prove scale.
