Polymarket Perps has launched with 20x leverage across 10 crypto, stock, commodity and index markets — the prediction market giant's first step beyond event contracts into leveraged price trading, and a direct challenge to the offshore perpetual futures venues that have dominated crypto-native trading for years.
The initial markets cover Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and Hyperliquid's HYPE token, alongside gold, silver, West Texas Intermediate oil, the S&P 500, the Nasdaq 100 and SPCX — a contract tracking SpaceX's share price that confers no ownership, voting rights or claim on the company's assets. Traders can open long or short positions with leverage up to 20x, though the precise limit varies by contract, position size and margin rules. Polymarket announced the product on X (Twitter):
"Polymarket Perps is live. Up to 20x leverage on crypto, stocks, commodities, & more. Deepest liquidity, lowest fees. Long BTC, predict the Fed, short the S&P reaction — only on Polymarket." — Polymarket (@Polymarket), September 3, 2026
What Polymarket perps actually are
Unlike the event contracts that built the platform's $1 billion revenue business, perpetual futures have no expiry and no defined payout. A position tracks its reference price indefinitely while funding payments pass between long and short traders to keep the contract near spot — longs generally pay shorts when the contract trades above its index, and the direction reverses below it. At 20x leverage, each dollar of margin supports $20 of exposure, magnifying gains and losses equally, and the platform can liquidate a position automatically once adverse moves erode the required collateral.
The event-contract and perp products are complements rather than substitutes. A Polymarket event market might let users bet on the outcome of a Fed meeting, while gold, index or crypto perps let them trade the price movements around the decision itself — with fundamentally different risk profiles, since event shares settle at a defined value while a leveraged perp compounds gains or losses continuously. Polymarket disclosed no trading volume, open interest or collateral figures at launch, and its "deepest liquidity, lowest fees" claim arrived without comparative data.
Infrastructure built for the load
Offering 20x leverage raises the engineering stakes, because small delays in execution or pricing can cascade into margin miscalculations and unfair liquidations. Polymarket has been reworking its infrastructure with exactly this in mind: the company is targeting a capacity of 200,000 orders per second — roughly 15 times previous throughput — with an architecture designed to eventually exceed 400,000. Testing reportedly produced a 10- to 20-fold improvement in p99 latency, the measure that tracks the slowest transactions during busy periods, though no independent performance assessment has been published.
The platform also carries recent scars from leveraged-adjacent products. In August, Polymarket changed the settlement method for its short-duration crypto event contracts after research identified 821 accounts with a combined $8.2 million in profits from settlement windows classified as likely manipulated. The revised system uses time-weighted prices — a 30-second average for five-minute contracts and 60-second averages for longer markets — with Chainlink Data Streams supplying pricing. Prediction platforms have attracted regulatory pressure across the board, and perps sharpen the scrutiny.
The crowded race to trade everything
The U.S. exclusion is structural: Polymarket's 2022 CFTC settlement — which found the company operated an unregistered trading facility — confines the international perps service to jurisdictions where it is legally available, while the company pursues a separate regulated route back into the American market. U.S. users must watch from the sidelines as the product landscape evolves onshore through channels like Coinbase's stock perpetual filings and the CFTC-approved Kalshi contracts.
The competitive direction is unmistakable. Coinbase launched 23 futures markets in Canada, Binance added U.S. stock options with physical settlement, and Polymarket has now added leverage to a platform best known for political betting. Every major venue is converging on the same product: one account, every asset class, maximum leverage — and the venues that survive will be the ones whose infrastructure and pricing integrity can bear the load that 20x leverage puts on every subsystem.
