Paradigm Raises $1.2 Billion Fourth Fund to Push Beyond Crypto Into AI and Robotics
Paradigm has closed a $1.2 billion fourth fund to invest in crypto, AI, robotics, and frontier technologies. The move broadens the firm's investment strategy while maintaining a strong focus on blockchain innovation and emerging autonomous systems.

One of crypto's most influential venture firms just made its broadest bet yet. Paradigm announced on Wednesday that it has closed $1.2 billion for its fourth fund — capital it says will be deployed first in crypto, and now across AI, robotics, and other frontier technologies. The firm stressed that its core mission is unchanged, pointing to continued investment in the reinvention of markets and the financial system and name-checking two of its marquee positions: perpetuals exchange Hyperliquid and prediction markets platform Kalshi.

The close is slightly below the roughly $1.5 billion target The Wall Street Journal reported the firm was seeking in February for a fund spanning AI and robotics — but it still ranks among the largest pools of capital raised by a crypto-native investor this cycle, and it formalizes a strategic widening that has been visible in Paradigm's dealflow for months.

Why a Crypto Kingmaker Is Broadening Its Mandate

Founded in 2018 by Matt Huang and Coinbase co-founder Fred Ehrsam, Paradigm has raised more than $4 billion across three previous crypto-focused funds and built a reputation as the sector's most technically engaged investor. According to earlier reporting, management concluded that a crypto-only mandate risked forcing the firm to pass on attractive opportunities — particularly where the two fields overlap, as with AI agents that hold wallets, transact on-chain, and participate in markets autonomously.

The firm's non-crypto positions preview the thesis: autonomous drone delivery service Zipline, robotic metal fabrication platform SendCutSend, and AI lab Nous Research, creator of the open-source Hermes Agent model. Paradigm also emphasized it will keep building where it accelerates crypto itself, citing its widely used developer tools Foundry and Reth alongside newer AI-focused projects EVMbench and Centaur — a signal that the firm sees its engineering culture, not just its checkbook, as the bridge between the two industries.

Part of a Stampede, Not an Outlier

Paradigm's move crystallizes a trend running through crypto venture capital. Framework Ventures raised $400 million last month for a fourth fund covering crypto plus AI, robotics, and energy. Haun Ventures — led by former a16z partner Katie Haun — closed $1 billion in May, expanding into AI for the first time. Even the exchanges are converging: Crypto.com and Coinbase have both made significant bets on AI agents, retooling their platforms to serve automated users alongside human ones.

The gravitational pull is easy to quantify. Global venture funding hit a record $510 billion in the first half of 2026 — surpassing the $440 billion invested across all of last year, according to Crunchbase — and AI captured the majority of it, with OpenAI and Anthropic alone accounting for more than 40% of all funding. Crypto, by contrast, drew about $10.8 billion in the same period per Cryptorank — barely 2% of the total. For firms whose limited partners watch those relative returns, a hybrid mandate is less a pivot than a survival adaptation.

What It Means for Crypto Founders

The reading for the crypto industry cuts both ways. The bearish take: even its most committed champion no longer believes crypto alone can absorb a billion-dollar fund, a quiet verdict on the sector's diminished share of venture flows. The bullish take: Paradigm's framing — crypto first — keeps a deep-pocketed, technically fluent investor anchored in the space while adding expertise in the AI systems most likely to become crypto's biggest users. If autonomous agents genuinely need permissionless payment rails, stablecoins, and on-chain identity — the argument chains like Celo and platforms like NEAR are already building around — then the firms straddling both sides of that bridge will be positioned to fund it end to end.

The Bottom Line

Paradigm's $1.2 billion Fund IV is both a war chest and a statement about where the frontier has moved: not away from crypto, but toward the merger of programmable money with autonomous intelligence. With AI devouring the majority of a record $510 billion venture half-year while crypto claims a sliver, the smartest crypto capital has decided the way to stay relevant is to fund both sides of the convergence. The question the fund will answer over the next decade is whether that convergence is real — or whether crypto's best investors simply followed the money.
