Hanwha Builds Tokenized Securities Platform on Avalanche

Hanwha builds a tokenized securities platform on Avalanche for real-world financial assets.

Summary :

  • Hanwha completed a tokenized securities platform with FairSquare Lab.

  • It runs on Avalanche alongside Hyperledger Besu.

  • Korea's Electronic Securities Act takes effect February 4, 2027.

  • Retail caps: 30 million won subscriptions, 100 million won OTC per year.

  • The KSD will run a validator node across the infrastructure.

Hanwha Investment & Securities has finished building Korea's most advanced tokenized securities platform, and the detail that should stop every "Ethereum takes institutional tokenization" assumption in its tracks: it runs on Avalanche. The Korean brokerage completed the multi-blockchain platform with FairSquare Lab, supporting Avalanche's public EVM chain alongside enterprise Hyperledger Besu, reported Seoul Economic Daily on Sept. 6, positioning for the moment Korean law recognizes distributed ledgers as securities registers on February 4, 2027.

The regulatory scaffolding around that date is the real story. The Electronic Securities Act and Capital Markets Act amendments passed in January 2026 and take effect in four months. The Financial Services Commission unveiled its three-stage roadmap on Sept. 4: phase one, aligned with the February launch, tokenizes private money market funds, institutional bonds, unlisted trust shares and fractional investment securities; phase two extends to all publicly offered securities; phase three adds stablecoin payment rails pending separate legislation. The Korea Securities Depository, the central infrastructure that will oversee issuance and registration, is connecting with Avalanche, Hyperledger Besu and Hyperledger Fabric as a validator node, and a KSD official told the publication several companies have requested support through industry consultations.

Why Avalanche keeps winning Asian bank tokenization

The Hanwha build is not an isolated win. Japan's Progmat, which carries more than 452 billion yen, over $3 billion, in tokenized assets, migrated from Corda to an Avalanche layer 1 in July 2025. The pattern across Asia's institutional platforms is consistent: public or subnet EVM chains give banks regulatory-friendly validators and configurable permissions without the operational fragility of a fully private chain, while preserving a path to composability that pure enterprise chains cannot offer. Korea's 2027 target was always the schedule to watch, and Hanwha's completion shows the private sector is building ahead of the law rather than behind it.

Hanwha's positioning is doubly aggressive. It holds 9.6% of Securitize, the US tokenization market leader, making it the largest shareholder, plus a stake in Digital Asset, while Samsung SDS builds central token securities infrastructure domestically. The company is simultaneously backing the American champion and building the Korean rails, a two-continent hedge that few brokerages can afford. Solana just led all networks in RWA inflows at $348 million, and 89% of tokenized assets still sit idle, so the venues that convert issuance into actual circulation are the ones that will set the sector's standards. Korea's staggered rollout, with strict retail caps, is betting on institutions first.

The caps that could strangle the market at birth

Now the caution. Retail participation is throttled: non-monetary trust beneficiary certificates cap at the lower of 30 million won, about $22,500, or 5% of an issuance, and OTC exchange trading caps annual net purchases at 100 million won, about $75,000, per retail investor per venue. For a market whose bull case is liquidity, Korea has pre-committed to thin secondary flow, and phase one excludes public equities and stablecoin settlement entirely. Brokerages also require FSS consultation for OTC intermediation and must match the operational stability of legacy electronic systems, a bar that has killed faster projects elsewhere.

Watch February 4, 2027 as a live test of the thesis that regulatory clarity, not technology, is what tokenization has been waiting for. Korea will have the law, the KSD infrastructure, a completed brokerage platform and a queue of tokenized products all at once. If volumes stay anemic under the retail caps, the lesson is that permission and demand are different things. If they do not, every regulator dragging its feet on tokenized securities legislation just lost its last excuse, and Avalanche, already embedded in two of Asia's three largest economies' infrastructure, becomes the quiet winner of the entire institutional race.
